    During those first few weeks on board, hearing a stray flicker or jolt had nearly sent him into a panic attack about Mary breaking and killing him or stranding him out here. The constant sound was like taking a live electrical wire straight to his nervous system. Now, as he sat hunched over a table in the lab staring blearily into the blue light of his laptop, the noises were back to comforting again. Something to tell him that he’s not alone and remind him that nothing was crashing and burning. Soothing. Like white noise, if white noise was tinged gray.
