It was just… Pop Idol Vanessa Mystery never got to have its own live action movie or series, even though the fans had been begging for it for years. (Well. There was one adaptation. The movie that made the main four act like sisters, and gave Vanessa some random boyfriend. It Was Not To Be Spoken Of.) Niko had always wanted to see her childhood crushes on the big screen, saying all the brave things she could only dream of.
So when the genie asked, in a deep, portentous voice, “What is your greatest wish?”, Niko (very understandably) said, “I want my favorite manga to come to life!”Or: A genie takes a wish too literally. Everyone deals with the consequences.

“24 hours?”
“24 hours. From the minute the clock strikes midnight. Do we have a deal?”
The woman extends her hand, the hazy outline of her fingers flickering in the candlelight like the ripples of water. She isn’t a ghost, not exactly (not like the boys are at least), but she also isn’t not. It’d been a perplexing case, full of magic and mystery far beyond the extent of what the Dead Boy Detectives had explored in the past few decades. She had explained, and Edwin had taken careful note of the specifics, but it still doesn’t really make all that much sense.
What makes even less sense is how exactly the spell she’s offering works, her magic surpassing Edwin’s, something supernatural and spiritual like the Cat King’s, far beyond the boy’s comprehension… but god if the appeal isn’t enough to make the two ghosts consider throwing caution to the wind.

It wasn’t that Charlize expected much when she leaned into Edith’s space. She always wanted to get closer, didn’t she, in any way she could. Tide to the full moon. Like this, sitting on the banister and tilting closer to Edith, who was standing upright as ever, it was all she could do not to crash into her and hope to break.
As for the comment – well. That was for a laugh.

Ever so slowly, things started changing. Charles spent more time in the library, never mind how his mates teased him, skimming through everything even slightly paranormal. Just in case. Sometimes he’d get to his room and his desk would be way neater than he’d left it; sometimes it’d be just the same, except that some old trinket had been pulled out from who-knows-where. There were flowers tucked in a couple of his books now, pressed flat and pretty, and Charles put them carefully back the few times they fell out, before he learnt how to hold the books up to prevent it. Once, when he was late for morning classes and stumbled out of his room with his tie all askew, he felt that cool brush like fingers at his throat, and no teacher gave him trouble for his appearance.
The day wasn’t anything special, except for that. Except that, at the end of it, Charles turned to the perpetual cold spot in his room and said, “Realise I never properly introduced myself, did I? My name’s Charlie – well, Charles, really. What’s yours?”
Or: Charles and his friendly boarding school ghost make each other’s acquaintance.

He was wearing that small and secret smile that Charles knew better than his own, strutting down the aisle like it was a runway privileged enough to feature him. Charles couldn’t take his eyes off him even if he wanted to. The world and everyone in it faded away, ‘til Edwin was all he could see. “So, what do you do around here?” Niko asked, when all the introductions had been handled, and she and the cloud goddess – Crystal, a pretty name for a pretty goddess – stood just within sight of Edwin and his sun god suitor. After all, being chosen as a chaperone for this celestial courting was the highest honor imaginable – unless you were the moon god’s best, and maybe only, friend. Or not anymore, by the look of Charles’ easy smile and the loosening line of Edwin’s shoulders, visible even through the veil. Niko sure hoped so. It would be nice for Edwin to get a friend out of this union, at the very least. She hoped for more, but then, she’d always been a romantic.
