The exam goes wrong almost immediately.
Izuku wouldn't have expected anything less though. Him and Kacchan against All Might. It was literally designed to blow up.
He thinks maybe, if things were different, he would be more upset than anything, maybe a little angry or disappointed. Instead, on the ground with a stinging face and cut off pleas that they just work together, Izuku is furious.
Blindingly, incandescently so.

Two months later, apparently just before Midoriya's birthday, Tomura begins calling the boy Izuku. Some days, when Kurogiri passes his room in the dead silence of night, he can hear him laughing.
The muffled, carefully dampened sound, engineered not to carry, breaks his heart. The laugh is not one of a carefree sixteen year old, but of a terrified child so unused to joy.
(Kurogiri's heart breaks often and sharply, and he never does get used to it.)

Summary
The pain and the incessant itch feel distant. Like cool palms laid across a burning throat. Like Izuku telling him that he'd help as the world pressed in like a noose.
The trapped feeling is still there, though Tomura wishes Izuku had chased it off forever in one go. He feels stiffled beneath Sensei's thumb, by the knowledge that things would've been fine if his savior had just trusted him, instead of treating him like a child. He does not feel cornered by his memories of Eraserhead, desperate and bleeding to protect Izuku's class, the picture of a hero.

It occurs to Dick, as he mounts over the man in front of him, that his conditioning runs deep.
It’s not that he’s here, with Bruce. Dick’s love for him is anything but conditioned- it was pleadingly discouraged, constantly rebuffed, forced to be proven over and over again. Dick’s love for Bruce is in his bones.
The fact that they’re grinding their crotches together is more debatable.

Dick Grayson takes a deep breath, as he and his parents stand on the small platform. He shifts from foot to foot, running through the routine in his head one last time. John Grayson turns back and smiles at him momentarily.
In a matter of moments, the quiet snap of wires will alert Dick something is wrong a split second before anyone else notices, followed by twin impacts. One sickening crunch will ring through the crowd before the screaming starts, when they realize it isn’t part of the show.
Dick’s life will never be the same after this, not remotely.

“Allow me to tell you…a story,” the thing wearing a child’s skin says. The words sound like they’ve been dragged through concrete, but its smile is a little less malicious and a little more hollow. That’s…maybe good?
Sans shrugs.
“sure. i love stories. this one have a happy ending?”
It grimaces through that pinned-on smile. Its eyes are flat and dead.
“That remains to be seen,” it mutters. It shrugs its shoulders, squirms a little bit. Trying to get comfortable in skin that it doesn’t belong in.
“It’s a story about some kid who freed all the monsters,” it says. “They’re…they’re a…good…they’re…”

In fact, he would have rather been anywhere but here, sat down at the dining table like a little kid about to be scolded. But Nightmare had ordered them all to come, and Cross wasn’t about to disobey an order over his own unease.
Despite calling them, Nightmare was the last one to enter the dining room, head held high and obviously peeved. Cross didn’t even need to see his tentacles lashing wildly behind him to figure that one out.
