Soaked and far from Fort Hope, the pair must find shelter as the temperature drops. It doesn't help when Jim keeps seeing his dead brother everywhere, while Hoffman experiences his own self hatred and struggles with his growing feelings towards his friend.

The balcony is dark. Moonlight streaks the bloodstained carpet underneath his feet. Someone is sniffling downstairs, and it echoes through the hostel. Along with shuffling, heavy breathing, and quiet murmurs. The door behind him doesn’t do much to muffle the cop’s strangled noises of pain. Wind whistles through the broken window.
All these little sounds, and it still feels too quiet.
Titus takes a deep breath. He reaches up, pulls off his hat, and runs his hand through his close-cropped hair. His lips are pressed thin, his jaw lined tightly. He holds the hat in front of his chest, his calloused fingers pressing tightly into the fabric.
“What the fuck,” he whispers, glancing around before looking back at Garte, “were you thinking?”

Summary
Of course Hermann’s final moments are drilling down to just this.
The tears on his cheeks are the only source of warmth, but they rapidly disappear under the onslaught of the storm.
Even his tears are stolen, salt into the sea, just as his body will soon be once he dies.
But then, cutting through all of cold rain, suddenly something warm and soft, even tender, settles against Hermann’s arm.
Hermann’s gaze falls on the hand on his, a familiar arm covered in the bright colors and lines of kaiju, a prayer made fucking flesh.
Hermann blinks, perhaps to clear the water from his eyes, perhaps to blink away the hallucination brought on by the press of the water and cold against his skin. After all, it’s a well-known symptom of hypothermia that people will hallucinate that they are getting warmer as they get closer to the end- that must be the reason why he sees Newton Geiszler in front of him.
(When a "prank" meant to teach Hermann his place goes wrong, he ends up trapped outside of the Shatterdome as a storm rolls in. Hermann is certain all is lost- but there is one person out there that refuses to let Hermann suffer alone.
Damn Newton Geiszler and his reckless heroism.)
