"I do miss him," Akira admits softly, after a few minutes of nothing but an occasional hitched breath. From the watery sound of his voice, it's clear he's still crying. Something about it makes Ryuji's heart twist.
"That's cool, dude," Ryuji says, and then internally beats himself up for his total inability to say anything helpful. Akira must agree with his internal monologue, because they shake their head minutely against his chest.
"I was... I mean despite everything, I was always..." His voice catches and he takes a measured breath, self-soothing. "It's different. I'm still..."
"It's okay, man. I get it," Ryuji says, absolutely not getting it. But he squeezes Akira closer and rubs his shoulder and hopes it'll help and that he can't feel the rapid heartbeat pattering in Ryuji's chest.

Ryuji's got feelings for Akira, Akira's got feelings for Akechi, and Akechi's dead. Probably. Or he's in the produce aisle while Ryuji's just trying to get some groceries, because why wouldn't he be?

“C’mon, man,” Ryuji groaned, falling back on his bed with a thunk. He didn’t expect Ren to be available at every second, nor did he claim a stake in the boy’s free time and outside relationships. He didn’t. But it was fine to start getting a little jealous when they hadn’t hung out one-on-one in well over a month, right? They were supposed to be best friends.

Ryuji always wakes up in the mornings after those nights with Akira’s arms around his waist, holding him close. Ironically, Ryuji usually ends up feeling like Akira was the one who made him feel safe and not the other way around. Not exactly what he’s aiming for, but it’s not like he’d complain about it either.
That’s probably how they’ll wake up tomorrow, too, if Akira doesn’t get into his own bed before then. They’ve been falling asleep like this more and more recently, to the point where Ryuji’s starting to develop a permanent cramp in his neck. It’s worth it if it means he gets to lie here with Akira draped over him like a blanket though, eyes closed and expression disarmed and looking, above all else, completely and utterly safe and at home. It all makes Ryuji feel so warm, his chest filling with butterflies and his ears tingling with a blush.
A platonic blush, though. He and Akira are friends, and therefore Ryuji is happy that he feels comfortable enough to sleep in front of him. It’s not like—weird, or gay.

Akira comes back to his and Ryuji's dorm and falls asleep. Ryuji ends up having a long overdue realisation.

Sure enough, the chalk flies past her and hits Akira smack in the forehead, knocks him awake, and sends a flurry of horrible nightmare syllables tumbling out of his mouth from the sheer surprise.
The language of Shadows sounds sharp and strange in the mundane banality of the classroom. Ann schools her expression, and does her best to project an air of nope, nothing's wrong, nothing to see here, there's definitely no one speaking in horrible eldritch tongues, why would you even say that?

It's too bad it makes him sound like he's speaking in some kind of cursed, inhuman, monster tongue, but the rest of the Phantom Thieves get used to it.
