    Aang’s eyebrow quirks, and his hand retreats an inch or two. He leans back slightly, and Katara fights a wince, or the urge to smack herself on the forehead.

    “You said that earlier,” he says flatly. And she did: it’s one of the first things she said to him after their bone-crushing reunion hug, her voice sounding breathless and disbelieving to her own ears as she had looked him up and down. Aang had rubbed his neck and preened shyly, You think so?

    But now he’s not preening; now that statement seems to be the source of everything that’s wrong with the world. Aang says, “I thought you were just pointing out the obvious. Do you mean things are different? Like between us?”
