Summary
There was very little gentleness in most of Arthur's physical interactions. He was a warrior, but even outside of that, his role as a leader meant that by necessity he had to maintain a certain distance and decorum that contained a different kind of violence. Sometimes he wondered if the safety of that distance was worth the ache of isolation.
Or: 5 times Arthur noticed Merlin using his gentle hands to tend to his knights and one time Merlin took care of Arthur himself.

Summary
The woman’s striking bright red lips parted in a dramatic gasp as her full cup upended itself over Merlin. It was shockingly hot, immediately seeping into his stupid snowman sweater and staining it brown. He had known it was coming— he had done it on purpose and he was still surprised. Gwen smashed into Merlin from behind and suddenly all four of them were toppling like festive dominoes to the cafe floor.

Or... the silly morgwen & merthur holiday coffee shop meet-cute microfic that nobody asked for.

Summary
Gwen once saw Merlin lick an apple before giving it to the Prince Regent.
She knew, of course, that he regularly stole food from Arthur’s plate before serving it; Gwen typically didn’t think anything of it. Surely Arthur would have made a fuss years ago, if it bothered him. The two of them had always had a peculiar and certainly unconventional working relationship.

Summary
On a long and winding road midway between the sea and the city, and at the edge of a dense and dark forest, there was a town called Eastgate.
Although Eastgate was by all accounts an ordinary town, there were several things that made it unique. Eastgate had an oddly high proportion of books to the number of inhabitants, a strategic importance that kept nobles interested enough in its security to have appointed a guardian, and a single ancient hawthorn tree.
The tree had been there before Eastgate and as the town had grown, the tree’s presence was honored. It was a symbol and a promise and— some believed— a gateway.
So, when the local innkeepers’ daughter disappears and her dear friend Nina comes to Lady Azira for help, they find themselves standing at the ancient tree and seeking answers from those beyond the Forest.

Summary
"I have thought of you often. Have you thought of me at all?" Lancelot clasped their hands together, his touch soft despite the red beaten into his skin.
"I missed you. I kept dreaming of a day we would meet again." Merlin whispered between the cage. And the summer's sunlight, which should have belonged to his blue eyes, shone instead on the cold iron collar at his throat.
Hengist has captured a different servant.

Summary
Merlin’s life isn’t his own to live. The tattoo that sets him apart as a magic user has the annoying tendency to glow gold, and no one will give him a job, and he’s been pining uselessly after his straight best friend slash housemate—who, he knows, mostly lets him live there because Arthur is decent enough not to let him sleep in the gutter, even if he’s an annoying prat the rest of the time.
But then Arthur decides to take the world by storm and starts pushing for some new laws to be accepted, and Merlin finds himself in the middle of Arthur’s attempt to change England.

Summary
“Are you sure you can’t do a bit of magic?” Arthur asks. “I promise I won’t behead you for it.”
“Very reassuring,” Merlin says. “Truly, that’s an extreme act of mercy on your part, my Lord. It’s almost enough to convince me you aren’t a dollophead.”
“What use are you,” Arthur mutters.
Or:
The druids call Merlin Emrys. Arthur isn't sure why they think his hapless manservant is some sort of powerful sorcerer, but it's certainly a good way to improve Camelot's relationship with the druids. It's only a little bit of a lie, surely.
Except it turns out that it's not a lie at all.

Summary
"Do you think you can spend an evening without insulting Merlin?”
Arthur looks as if the very idea is anathema to him. “It’s not insults,” he says. “It’s—”
“Your very own idea of courtship,” Gwen says. “But I’ve another idea. And it involves being very, very nice to Merlin. Didn’t you see the way he was flustering just now? He’s used to your barbed comments, Arthur, he has practically grown up with them. Didn’t you like the sight of him, all flushed from praise?”
“I’m not—” Arthur says, and abruptly cuts himself off as his own face goes pink. “I suppose so.”
“Here’s what we do,” Gwen starts.
Or: Gwen and Arthur set out to court a reluctant Merlin. Fortunately, Gwen knows exactly how Merlin wants to be loved.

Summary
In which Arthur makes his return from Avalon by rolling down a hill in Glastonbury, Merlin does his best to shelter him from the dangers of the modern world (like cars, Love Island, and blenders), and they both try to figure out what they’re supposed to do next.
The day it happens, Lesley shakes Merlin awake while wearing a tinfoil hat.
At first Merlin thinks he must be dreaming, and almost laughs at the lack of subtlety of his own subconscious. Then Lesley shakes him harder, and he thinks, Oh. It’s happened. She’s finally lost her last marble and decided to telegraph her insanity to the world. Which is very considerate of her, for a change.
“Merlin,” Lesley says again.
Merlin blinks up at her. “What on earth are you wearing?”
“What?” Lesley says, confused.
Merlin points to his own head, and Lesley touches her hair.
“Oh. I was dying my hair,” Lesley says, then shakes her head. The tinfoil crackles. “Forget that! You need to see this.”
She shoves her phone in Merlin’s face and touches the screen. A video starts playing. It’s entirely too early for this.
