Summary
Dunk says nothing.
The not-saying costs him. He can feel the words crowding up behind his teeth, the foolish desperate words, and what of this, what of me, what of the dead candle and the unbarred door, and he holds them, because he knows what they are worth, which is nothing, less than nothing, they are the kind of words that end a thing like this, and Dunk has discovered in himself a cowardice he did not know he owned, which is that he would rather have the fire on these terms than not have it at all.Bookmarked by PAN_oramic

Bookmarker's Notes
The characterization and writing in this are immaculate, one of the best written fics I've ever read. Not exaggerating on that one bc holy crap the writing is insanely good. I don't usually go for angst but I was HOOKED the entire time and read this every second I could until I finished it.

Summary
“Have you ever thought about getting one?” Lyonel asked.
Dunk furrowed his brow at Lyonel’s vague question until it dawned on him. “Oh, fuck off—”
“Rude!” Lyonel exclaimed in delight. “How rude you are to me for asking but a simple question!”
“A hedge knight with an earring is asking to be robbed,” Dunk drawled.
A concession turns into a confession, and Duncan wears both very well.

Summary
In early spring of 209 AC, on the cusp of his heat, Lyonel Baratheon takes the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall to his bed. It ought mean nothing. But when Baelor Breakspear survives the Trial of Seven, the hours Lyonel spent with the hedge knight and the babe that comes of them set in motion a cascade of changes that warp the fate of the realm.
Plague, drought, politics -- Duncan has little opinion on any of them. He only knows that somewhere, at the point where the sky meets the sea, Lyonel is waiting for a true knight to return to him. But to become a man worthy of Lyonel Baratheon requires growth, and the Red Keep is quick to grind its heel upon the unwary.

Summary
“If I break my oath, even for you—” Dunk’s voice cracked. He thought of Ser Arlan’s face. Of Egg’s trust. Of everything he’d built himself to be. “What would that make me?”
“Mine.” Aerion’s fingers slid to the nape of Dunk’s neck, tangling in his hair. “It would make you mine.”
There are two kinds of distance between a common hedge knight and a Targaryen prince: the height that separates them, and the morality that should.

Summary
The Lord Stark looked down upon him clad in a heavy fur cape ladened with silver chains. His eyes resembled the blues of a crystalline lake– cold as the North. Even more so gazing at the flame that was Aerion. Burning hotter and hotter still as he stood firm against the eyes that seemed to swallow him whole.
They had met once.
Only once.
When their youth still showed on their cheeks, and the years had treated them kinder than any war ever could. When the summer sun threatened to melt the young northerner, and when pale locks seemingly glowed iridescent when waves of golden light shone through leaves.
When Aerion Targaryen, the Brightflame, was promised to Duncan Stark of Winterfell.
