Simon never got the chance to grow used to that fact, because he was dead. Or at least, he was supposed to be.
When Simon (notably not dead) washes up on the shore inside Grace’s biodome, both of them are proven very wrong.

The two had exchanged enough knowing looks and vague references to make it clear that they both remembered, though in all honesty the Captain had known since the moment they’d walked to the window with him, staring out at the new planet. They weren’t entirely sure how he remembered; at the beginning of their adventure he didn’t seem aware of the actions that his future self had made in the past. They shook their head. That was too many tenses for one thought. The point was, the two hadn’t gotten the chance to actually talk about what happened, and it was eating up the Captain from the inside. Mark had been so on edge the last few days, flinching a little too easily, assuming he was in trouble instead of perking up when his name was called. They needed him to know that they understood, that they weren’t angry. Not at him.

Asriel. Chara thought of him often. They missed him more than they felt most other things, sometimes even more than the anger at its worst. They always listened when Flowey’s name was mentioned, though it was usually in hushed tones by people who thought Frisk couldn’t hear them. There wasn’t much news; no one had seen Flowey since everyone left the Underground, and it wasn’t as though anyone except Frisk knew who he really was. There were rumors, but no one had put the pieces together as far as they knew. He was probably still down there somewhere, biding his time. Frisk seemed hopeful that there would be a way to bring Asriel back someday, and Chara wanted to believe them. They wanted to talk to him again, even just for a moment. Prove to him that they were good, deep down. When Asriel confessed to Frisk that Chara wasn’t a good person, they’d felt the anger surge… then dissipate. Asriel was right. Asriel was always right. But maybe with time, Chara could change.

Chara begins to develop a soul again and gets a second chance at life. They want to give Asriel that chance, too.

The submarine was easy to reach by comparison, and he had to be cautious not to bowl anyone over with his tail as he slithered inside, his body curled around Painter. Someone shouted orders unintelligible to Sebastian’s ears, and the hatch began to shut. He made the vague, half-formed realization that, if this was all real and not a SPRINT-based hallucination, this was the last time he would ever see Urbanshade again. Then the hatch shut, and he lost consciousness.

Stan stepped over to the head of the ship and stared out at the open ocean, wishing he could undo the last 20 seconds. He knew that Ford hadn’t told him everything about the last 30 years. That the boy he’d grown up with and the man he was sailing around the world with were disconnected, though still strung together by some fundamental parts. He knew 30 years had passed; he just hadn’t expected it to be so hard to accept that things had changed. It almost would have been easier if Ford was a different person entirely— easier to navigate, at least. This was much more complicated.

Anyone in their right mind would have been a least a little alarmed by the sound of gunshots, coming from at least three models of gun, in the middle of the night on a Tuesday.
Luckily for Rocky, he was never in his right mind, so he was generally exempt from that rule. Also, his cousin was currently holding two out of three of the guns in question, which made matters much easier as far as he was concerned.

'The front end was crushed, the tree directly in the middle, making what looked like an incredibly morbid sandwich. All of the windows were shattered, scattering broken glass around the scene, and a deflated airbag that had made its way through the windshield flew up and down in the wind like a vengeful ghost. The smell of smoke was drifting faintly around the car, but it had mostly cleared up, which was both a relief and a terrifying indication that the car had, in fact, been there since the earthquake.'

The Unknown isn't the only place with darkness. It resides everywhere, even when there is also light. Often, it's so subtle that one may not notice it at all. But sometimes on the darkest nights, shadows cover everything within reach, and even the brightest light cannot stop them. At times like these, the best thing to do is to strike a match, find another pair of hands in the darkness, and wait for the sun to rise.

They were barely processing anything in the courtroom except for the witness’s account, desperate to find something to make the trial end. Even the judge looked like he wanted to leave.
Maybe that was why none of them noticed the faint smell of smoke, growing steadily stronger as the trial progressed.
