Summary
Iida sits next to him outside the bath, holding his hand tightly—as tightly as he had when he caught Izuku out of the sky just a few hours ago.
“You can sleep if you want,” Iida says quietly. “I will make sure you don’t fall in.” Iida’s smile is smaller than his brother’s, more subdued than All Might’s, but it is just as steady. Perhaps more genuine. A quiet I am here, I won’t let you drown that Izuku wishes he could inspire in others.
Trusting his friends to keep him safe, he lays his head against the wall of the bath, but he doesn’t fall asleep.
Across the room, Kirishima catches his eye and gives him a thumbs-up and a grin. Izuku watches him blankly, wishing he could return the smile, but he just can’t.

Basically, I thought the end to the Dark Deku arc was too lighthearted, and I wanted more of a tender, angsty beat about recovering through burnout.

Sometimes he whispered to himself that tomorrow would be better.
He missed his friends more than he let himself admit. He missed the noise, the way they talked to him without weighing every word, the way they filled silence without meaning to. He missed knowing he wasn’t something fragile tucked away in a spare corner, waiting for the right moment to be useful again.
He didn’t let himself think about that for long.
Wanting made the nights harder. Wanting made the dreams worse as the scale tipped with more stake.
Still, when exhaustion finally dragged him under, the nightmares came back like they always did. And he woke the same way every time—half tangled in his own power, breath uneven, chest tight, the room too quiet to feel real.
And in the moments before morning, when the sky was still dark and empty, Izuku wondered how long he could keep telling himself this was fine before it stopped being true.

Izuku wonders, sometimes, how long he has been here.
He gave up awhile back on trying to figure out where he is, exactly, and he’s mostly forgotten why. Made himself forget, he thinks, but as with many things these days, he is unsure.
He can’t even use the torture to keep time. Some days after he is ripped apart and put back together, he is sent back to his cell and given only an hour or less to recuperate before he is hauled away again, limp and still drenched in his own blood. Other days he sits in the dark with his back pressed against the wall, fists curled, waiting for pain that never comes.
or: izuku manages to find warmth even in the coldest of places. or rather, it finds him.
