These last weeks have done a number on Ponyboy. Sometimes he just can’t help the snideness of his tone, no matter how much he suppresses it, no matter if it’s toward Darry or Soda or anyone else. He’s still a Curtis, after all. “So what?”
A flicker of something flashes in Darry’s eyes, a relapse, but he bites down on his bottom lip and he quickly lets it go. They’ve worked on this together. They’re grown now; they’ve moved past the pettiness. “So, you need’a sleep, Ponyboy. We’ve been through this a million damn times.”
“I was sleepin’.”
“And?”
Ponyboy just shrugs, and Darry furrows his eyebrows a little.
“Well, get back to bed. You look exhausted, kid.”
or, seventeen-and-a-half year old ponyboy wakes up from a nightmare, and both his brothers are right there to help him through it as they reflect on the last three years together
