“I’m not a toddler, dude, I can walk by myself,” The kid said.
“I got my orders,” He ignored the eye roll the kid threw at him, “And quit calling me dude.”
“Whatever you say,” She gave him a sly smile, “Bro.”

“It’s not that,” Ellie interjects softly. Joel sighs.
“Then what is it?”
She doesn’t know how to tell him this- that it’s not school, its not him or even Cat. It’s not that easy. It’s her. She doesn’t know how to tell her girlfriend that she keeps hurting her feelings. She doesn’t know how to tell Joel how hard she feels like she has to work to make him proud. She doesn’t know how to keep all of them - her family, her friends, her girlfriend - happy and keep herself happy too. She feels like she did the first time Joel taught her how to swim: scared shitless on the edge of that dark pool, furious at herself for agreeing to this, like she was on the very cusp of drowning.

Joel sighs, runs his hand wearily over his face. “Baby,” he says, and despite herself, Ellie feels her shoulders relax at the nickname. “This - it’s a threat against all of us. It’s not something we can let lie.”
“I’m not telling you to just let it lie,” Ellie retorts. “Just- why does it have to be you?”
Joel looks away, shifts on his feet. “Ellie,” he says, and the timbre of his voice rakes a claw down her spine. “You know why.”
She does, and that’s the thing- she’s not sure she’s worth it, this kind of love that goes blind with rage in the face of threats, the kind of love that drives people out of their homes and into the night and away from their families. The kind of love that demands sacrifice. It sits uneasily beneath her skin, like an electric current.

Summary
Joel turns and peers cautiously down the alley. In the fading light he can make out three figures, teenage boys if he had to guess, in a semi-circle around a kneeling figure. Their head turns and Joel catches sight of a brown ponytail between the boys’ legs, a flash of a knife gripped in a hand.
One of them steps forward and kicks her in the shoulder, sending her sprawling backwards. She scrambles back to her feet, knife outstretched in front of her, teeth bared. If she wasn’t so goddamn small, Joel would think she was more than capable of handling herself against these guys, but they’ve each got probably half a foot and fifty pounds on her, and he finds himself walking closer.
