Louis’ hand is cold when Lestat holds it, his face like ice when Lestat touches his jaw. His heart hammers against his ribs.
Instinct kicks in.
Lestat slits his wrist with a sharp nail, bringing it to Louis’ unmoving, beautiful lips, letting blood spill over his chin like a cascade.
“What are you doing?!” Gabriella again. Her voice irritates him.
“He needs my blood,” Lestat answers, not taking his eyes away from Louis’ still figure.
“What? You’re not well enough to do this, Lestat!” Cookie’s voice now. “You lost a lot of blood, they’re giving him blood already, there’s no need—”
“He needs mine!” He shouts, losing all composure, only then feeling the tears angrily stream down his face. He thinks of Louis’ reaction to the taste of his blood at the bar, the first time that century. His hollowed cheeks, eyes rolling to the back of his skull. Lestat wants to fall to his knees and weep. “I know it, he needs mine. It’ll help him! Just… Just let me do this…”

The medics rushed in, red jackets slicing through the white like wounds, their voices sharp and urgent as they kneel beside Shane, telling him to stay awake, to open his eyes, to listen. Each word landed like a blow. Ilya wanted to scream at them to be careful, wants to tear his helmet off and tell them Shane is funny even if he called him boring all the time, that he looked so pretty when he smiled unguarded, that his freckles bunch when he grins, that his eyes tell before words left his mouth.
