The numbers didn’t just fluctuate with people he had direct interactions with. Sometimes, he’d see a number spike or dip when someone walked by without even acknowledging him. It was confusing and gnawed at his logical mind like a mystery that refused to be solved.
But why else would these numbers exist if not to guide him through social interactions? Perhaps some kind of divine hint to avoid people altogether? As a scholar, he dealt with facts and reason, and what could be more factual than numbers? They were clear, precise, and—most importantly—they never lied.
