    Summary

The Ship of Dreams, the papers called it. To Jacob Seresin, son of a wealthy Texas cattle baron and fiancé of oil tycoon Beau Simpson, the RMS Titanic felt more like a cage. He felt trapped, helpless - a lonely hen caught in a coop with a hungry fox.

If only there were a rooster around to save him from his fate.

    Summary

Jake was kidnapped when he was four. His memories from before are very hazy. He is now fourteen and just trying to survive his kidnappers. But when he sees his parents on the tv one day he immediately recognizes them. He and Javy then immediately steal a car and plan a road trip from Texas to San Diego. They plan to go to a hospital and to police who will believe him and test his DNA. This sucks but please read it gets better. I just suck at summaries.

“That’s them,” Jake is a little breathy when he says it. His voice is filled with warmth, awe, and adoration.

“That’s who?” Javy demands sounding a little less panicked but a lot more confused.

“My parents. My dad and my papa. Javy, it’s them.” This time it’s Javy who stops breathing. He frantically reaches back for the remote and presses play. He stares in awe as his parents come back to life on the screen.

“We are here today because ten years ago today our son, Jacob Kazansky, was stolen off of a playground and has been missing ever since. My mate had taken him and our son Bradley to the park.” They pause for a minute to show a picture of what’s clearly a younger Jake and his baby goose, Bradley, taken on the day of his disappearance.

“Is this because you have to go to that thing?” Jake matched Bradley's pace with annoyingly little effort, pricey loafers clicking obnoxiously on the polished floor.

    “What thing?”

“The thing with the, you know—”

“I—what the fuck! The hell’s wrong with you? Jesus, never do that again—”

“I was churning butter! The hand motion was me churning butter—”

“—this is the White House, Seresin—”

“—but is that why?” Jake insisted, narrowly avoiding knocking over a bust of George Washington that was probably worth more than Bradley’s college tuition.

    “Why, what?”

“Is that why you’re so crabby?”

“No, Seresin. I’m not crabby because I have to go to the 50th Annual Association of Dairy Farmers’ National Showcase opening tonight. I’m crabby because you just announced the President had, and I quote, a “secret plan to fight inflation” to the entire White House Press Corps—”

    ⚖ ★ ⚖ ★ ⚖

a short detour into the Kazansky-Kerner administration’s White House, in which Bradley is the stressed-out head speechwriter to Jake’s chaotic deputy chief of staff, and they’re both on Natasha’s last fucking nerve, as usual.

"Do you like sales? Cos if you're looking for a good one, clothing is 90% off at our place tonight."
    "Only 90%?"
Jake pulled the collar of his shirt to the side, giving Bradley a glimpse of the dark green lacy strap running over his shoulder. "Trust me, baby, you won't want this 10% off."

    Summary

“I love this song.” Hangman’s eyes glittered in the dim light of the bar. Beside them, Izanami’s tail twitched, though in amusement or irritation, Bradley wasn’t sure.

It was amazing, really, that Bradley had once known how to read Jake Seresin and his daemon better than almost anyone. Now, Hangman seemed as inscrutable and remote as a distant star — coldly beautiful, forever out of reach. Whether it was because Jake had flown too fast for him to keep up, or if Bradley had just been too chickenshit to follow was a question that still haunted him, four years after Jake walked out the door and out of his life for good.
