”You’d call everything off right now, just for this?”
Just for this, he says. As though it’s trivial. As though it isn’t everything that Vox has dreamt of every night for the past several decades. As though the rejection doesn’t sting just as sharply every time he wakes up and reaches to the other side of a cold bed, hands searching for a lover that will never be there, and hears callous laughter echoing in the back of his skull.
Vox sucks in a shaky breath, closing his eyes. He tilts his face downward, unable to look at Alastor when he admits it. He almost can’t bring himself to, sure that Alastor is already certain of the answer.
”Yes,” he whispers.
”You can’t be serious,” Alastor says quietly.

“Fantastic. And why are you here? You’re free. I don’t want to see your face. Get the hell out and leave me be.” So I can lick my wounds in private.
“Oh, you know,” Alastor sing-songs. He pulls up a chair next to the sick bed, hops down on it, and primly crosses his legs. “After spending so much time here over the last week, I think I’ve gotten used to your hospitality. Maybe I miss being around you already!”
Vox knows Alastor is being sarcastic. He knows. And usually, he’d be able to shrug it off.
But he’s so damn beaten down already, the words are like a knife to the heart, making him bleed.
“I don’t want your fucking gloating,” he snarls. “You won. Is that what you wanted to hear? You were right about me, and I’ve failed, again, like you told me I would. Big fucking hurray to you. Go celebrate your victory with Princess Friendship.”

“You know,” Vox started smoothly as he pushed himself off his desk and trailed along the floor like a predator would toward its prey, slowly and calculating. “All these honeyed words thrown my way: sweetheart, dear, calling me pretty—one might confuse you for being sweet on me.”
Radio static scrambled in high pitched incredulity. Alastor looked caught between disbelief and outright hysterics.
As with anything involving Alastor, Vox never leaves unscathed, but he refuses to be the only one this time.

It’s two weeks later that the first change happens.
A disciple nicks themself on their sword while messing around and Shen Qingqiu has to make an embarrassing retreat. He finds himself on Qian Cao within minutes, hand over his mouth and nauseated by the way his attention had snapped to the cut, nearly salivating as the rich scent of iron wafted towards him. Mu Qingfang’s face is grim when he sees him, pupils dilated and nails digging into his cheek.
Mu Qingfang offers him options, should the changes continue and evolve.
Or
Shen Qingqiu gets bit by a small group of Vampire Bats that turn people into vampires with their bite, and as a result, Jinlan City goes a little bit differently.

Xie Lian looks up at him. He must be glaring, or on the verge of tears, because Hua Cheng desists immediately. He leans in to kiss his forehead and wipes some of the dampness from his cheeks with his thumb.
“I trust you, gege,” he says. A couple tears roll down Xie Lian’s cheeks, of shame and discomfort. He’s suddenly feeling a little like a cranky toddler. Hua Cheng catches the tears with his fingers and coos at him gently, rubbing his back. “This San Lang didn’t mean to make you upset. Will you forgive him?”

“Woah, woah,” Vox says. “Hold your horses. What—”
“This isn’t right.” The shadows around him swirl and turn darker and darker, sharpening into points. His eyes are shining red. “What did you do to me?”
“I didn’t do shit!” Vox sits up and crawls forward—Alastor presses himself back against the wall, ears flattened over his head. The hard turn from predator to scared-looking prey is making Vox’s head swim. “How is it my fault you’re rock hard?”
And he really is, Vox’s hindbrain notes. If anything, he seems to have gotten thicker—Vox can see the outline of him perfectly. Alastor curls in on himself when he notices Vox’s eyes.
“I don’t,” he starts, and then stops. That seems to be the end of the sentence.
“Well, you clearly are," Vox spits, frustrated. “I really don’t get the hassle here. I mean, we’ve been. Uh.” Together is a loaded word, but so is dating. Fraternizing? No, that sounds even more sordid. “Companionable. Right? This isn’t out of the, uh. Range of options.”

After the battle against Heaven, Vox follows Alastor into a bar. Conversation eventually turns to the Hell's Hottest Poll, and while Vox feels confident in his victory, Alastor isn't so sure.
