Summary
So there they are, a shopkeep and a curious stranger, losing daylight in silence. The man studies Jayce’s work while Jayce studies him, and isn’t curiosity just one hell of a thing? It can motivate a topside scientist to brave the gray, and it can bully out years of ingrained wariness to make room for itself.
The man moves again, the necessary three steps left to reach a workbench of works-in-progress. The metalwork of it is rough, all hinges and mechanisms wrought from steel scrap. The beginning of a knee joint, sitting next to the first prototype of Jayce’s own leg brace.
The man’s gaze lingers there, intent and molten in the dimming afternoon light. Then he’s reaching out, reaching forward, his careful fingers tracing along welding seams and scratches in the metal, and Jayce’s curiosity flash-boils.

“Is that… you, Viktor?”
It was barely more than a whisper, but he almost couldn’t bring himself to ask in the first place. The question scared him, the coming answer he feared even more. He knew the question was callous and loaded, but he had to know.
Those warm eyes faltered and became reproachful, they averted with a look of guilt, his eyebrows scrunching together. Viktor hugged his good knee tighter to his chest, his short and shallow breathing and his tightened lips betraying the hurt he felt at the question. The creases at the side of his nose deepened in dismay in the way only Viktor's face suited. All of these things told Jayce everything he needed desperately to know; this wasn’t the serene herald, or even the maniacal machine herald.
This was Viktor.

What were the chances of such a coincidence happening?
The very same rune that made him start working as soon as he turned eighteen just so he could afford university and pick up his father’s investigation where he left it, before that accident took his life years ago.Staring at the tattooist’s gorgeous face so intently, he didn’t miss the disappointment that took over the man’s features for a fleeting moment once he said ‘little’ and Jayce’s mouth ran before he could stop it.

When he starts to fall for the man, he’s just irritated. Jayce Talis is a grieving, sexy, headache and Viktor honestly has too much shit going on to deal with the strange, sad tornado that is Jayce. After an overwhelmingly hot hookup and a really wretched good-bye, Viktor is done. D-O-N-E.
