It was in the way Grayson sighed while looking out the safehouse's grimy window, long elegant fingers toying with the handle of his coffee mug. The way after sex he could feel the same fingers tracing initials that did not belong to Slade.
In those moments maybe Slade really is the only thing in his world. In those moments maybe Dick can delude both of them into believing the happy lies. Maybe the loud moments are there to drown out the truth.

And he wants to open his eyes and look for the offender, the great beast stalking him, churning his guts and making his skin crawl, but his eyes are so heavy he cannot open them. He wants, but what are wants in the face of impossibilities?
So he fluttered, in the fitful state of neither sleeping nor waking, but rather in a maddening third state. An ambiguous hazed state. One where thoughts seem to come and go like the tide.
Something brushes lightly across his right cheek, it's rough and calloused, a jerked motion lacking any semblance of grace. He holds his breath, waiting for it to happen again but it doesn't. Nothing. Disappointing, he wants to think.

“I want you to answer questions for me” he makes his words come out even and resolved, he refused to show weakness before the fiend. He would come out the other end of this with the upper hand.
The beast smiles at him. “ Richard you know I’m delighted to answer anything your heart desires" it flashes a wicked grin at him “but you know I have to ask for something in return.”
He scowls at its words. Of course it wants something. He didn't have anything for it, not that it would accept and not that he would be willing to give up.
It laughs at the obvious distress Dick is in over its words. “ I won't ask for anything I can use against you, I swear. Besides this keeps me honest, my contract binds me"
Dick is a demon hunter, someone who dedicated his life to destroying evil and upholding truth, righteousness, and everything good in this world. So why then is the only one he can turn to the very thing he has sworn to destroy?
