Summary
Over on the stage was Regulus. Seated, without any audio equipment or stage lighting, only his guitar resting on his knee and a notebook open on the empty stool next to him. Without looking up, Regulus began to play.
“It's not the open, flowing shirt that you're in, Or the light coming off of your skin, The fragile heart you've protected for so long, The mercy in your sense of right and wrong, It's not your hands searching slow in the dark, Or your nails leaving love's watermark, It's not the way you talk me off the roof, Your questions like directions to the truth”
Regulus was looking at his notebook still, as if he didn't know all the words by heart yet. James realized this was likely a new song. A love song. A breath was stuck in James' throat, and his feet were rooted to their spot.
“It's knowing that this can't go on forever, It's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone, Maybe we'll get forty years together, But, one day, I'll be gonе, One day, you'll be gone”

Summary
An uneasy look passed between James and Remus, before their eyes were back on Regulus. The youngest took a deep breath to steady himself before speaking.
“I know how to bring Sirius back.”
The words brought forth the reaction he was expecting — which was an interruption. Despite his plea to let him get it all out, he’d know they wouldn’t be able to let him speak without saying something. They hadn’t last time, though he had been far less ready last time.
“You can’t bring him back,” James was no longer spinning his wand. “Because he’s dead. You can’t bring the dead back, you don’t want to — it’s unnatural. I told you that’s what he wanted to say, didn’t I, Moony? Didn’t I? Well pass me my winnings, I was right!”

Regulus Black knew that he was one of the last people any of the Marauders -- Especially James Potter -- would ever want to see again, seeing as one of the last times they were all together Sirius was killed. They didn't believe his gut feeling that Sirius wasn’t truly dead, because they had all been there together when he died. Now, holding a years worth of proof, he needs their help to get his brother back.

Summary
After Regulus reaches past his 'expiry age' according to pureblood society, and with no marital prospects left except for the opportunists looking to take advantage of the Black family's predicament, he is allowed to marry James on the condition that Regulus will conceive an heir no matter what it costs and that James will move in to live with him into Grimmauld Place.
James follows him into the imperial Black family to protect him.

Summary
At the beginning of the Hogwarts 1977-1978 school year, James Potter finds a cat and Regulus Black finds a Horcrux.
These events are not unrelated.
What follows is a deal to their mutual benefit: James helps Regulus hone the finer details of advanced transfiguration, and in return, Regulus teaches James what he knows of occlumency and legilimency. James is pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoys their lessons, certainly more than he thought he would considering what (admittedly little) he knows of Sirius’s younger brother. Regulus, for his part, thought he was smart enough to know that anyone with as many secrets as him has no business teaching fucking mind reading to another person. Especially when that person is James Potter.
There is affection—the kind that only comes from meeting someone you never expected to understand you. And there is war—a looming thunderhead that neither of them wants to see consume the other.
The rest is a matter of secrets, family, and letting go.
