“His boyfriend?” The paramedic asks, a glint in his eye telling Avery that he understands the situation and that he’ll cover for the lie. Avery nods, swallowing hard, and enters the ambulance.

After the events of DAWTDE, Avery finally finds Derek alive. The King is gone, and for the first time, Avery can let himself exhale. When Derek wakes, they have to piece together what happened, but between quiet laughter and fragile smiles, they start to realize that maybe this time, they’ve found each other for good.
