Summary
Bucky returns from being snapped away by Thanos to find another five years lost and the world changed. That’s okay. That’s not new. Not for him.

This is the 4 Minute Window Advent calendar for 2081 AD--no, wait, sorry, it's only 2022. But yes, here we are! As always, my goal is to write a bit of story every day between the Immaculate Conception and Christmas, but nobody freak out if it's late or the next day or whatever: life has caught up to me, but I'll get this done, I promise. Explicit eventually, the rest as it comes.
I have a pretty good idea of where we're going, but if there's something you really want to see happen, tell me in comments and I'll work it in if I can. (In fact, actually, after this year's advent is finished, I'm thinking of opening up future advents to whoever wants to play in this universe. There are a million stories in the naked city, etc., and it's actually incredibly low pressure, narratively speaking: this year's installment, for instance, features such exciting scenes such as Steve Rogers Waxes Poetic About Pickles.) I am also hopeful that we'll see new work from some of the usual suspects and regular collaborators to 4MW. Thanks as always to my betas, all mistakes are mine, I'll fix typos as I catch them. In 1945 Steve Rogers crashed the Valkyrie into the Arctic Ocean and was never recovered.
In 2019 Bucky Barnes is walking along the beach below the decommissioned lighthouse where he lives with his sixteen month old daughter when he finds the body of a man washed up in the surf, half frozen but miraculously alive.
Bucky manages to revive him, but finds that the stranger has no memory of who he is or how he got here aside from a name: Steve. Snowed in by a blizzard soon after and unable to get Steve a medevac, Bucky discovers that the funny, good-hearted man slips into the fabric of his and Alice’s life faster than he would have thought possible. The two are undeniably drawn to each other, but as their feelings grow so does the looming possibility that the answer to the question “who is Steve?” might be much more complicated than either of them realized.

She had mint green nails, and a pair of dog tags clinked together around her neck. The teenager had long, brown hair that reached just past her shoulders. Most concerning, however, was the expression of righteous anger that scrunched her face, coupled with a blooming black eye and barely-restrained tears that swam in hazel eyes. She clutched tightly to a brown messenger bag slung over her right shoulder."

Ever since Steve had gotten Bucky back from Hydra, he had been working relentlessly at making him feel safe and happy again. It turned out the best method for that was praise - lots and lots of praise. So when Steve got home to find Bucky having managed both to make himself a snack AND take a bath, his heart warmed with all the praise and compliments to give his boyfriend. Bucky got to pick a reward - and Bucky wanted to play.
