Summary
Irving Bailiff keeps having a dream that he is loved.
He cannot explain it. It is a feeling rather than a setting. The love is new but the setting is always the same, has been the same for years. Long white corridors which twist at impossible angles into other long white corridors. The severed floor he assumes, although he has never been there.

Summary
Sometimes retirement for celestial and occult entities means a quaint cottage with heated floors and built-in bookcases and afternoon tea taken in the flourishing garden while the smell of the sea wafts over on the breeze. This is not that kind of retirement.

Summary
“Warlock,” the severe woman asked, straightening the child’s jacket. “What’s the reason for the season?”
The little boy's eyes lit up. “Gifs” he cried, jumping up and down. “Gifs, gifs, gifs, gifs.” Somewhere at the back of the line, another child started wailing. A little girl waiting behind them, fresh from holiday pictures in a red and green tartan sweater, turned to her mother and said, “but why can’t I open my presents now. I want them now.” The severe woman’s purple painted lips curled into a smile. Behind her sunglasses, one got the impression that her eyes were smiling too. It was not a very nice smile.

Summary
“What do you mean it’s on trial?” Aziraphale spluttered. “Books can’t go to court.”
“Of course they can! And this one--” Crowley took his sunglasses off to wink at Aziraphale. “Most titillating text of the century. It’s harmful to the public good is what it is!”
“What nonsense,” Aziraphale frowned. “Books aren’t harmful.”
OR: In which Madame Bovary sparks some uncomfortable angelic introspection.

Summary
Hawkeye has known BJ to be insecure about many things—his wife, his time away from his family, and, on the rare occasion, his skills as a surgeon.
Tonight while reeking of booze and crying himself dry, BJ admits to one more insecurity that takes Hawkeye by surprise.

Summary
“What are we playing for? Money? Pride?” Hawkeye toyed with a pawn, running his thumb over the smooth marble head. “Pawn to c3.”
“Let's play for a favor.”
That gave him pause, because BJ had a psyche more labyrinthine than the New York City sewer system, and Hawkeye had wound up on the receiving end of it on more than one unfortunate occasion—enough to make him cautious about nebulous wagers.
“What kind of favor?”
“Any kind. One ask, one ‘yes.’”
#
In the months after the end of the war, Hawkeye and BJ begin a game of phone-based correspondence chess. The stakes are simple: whoever wins earns a favor from the other. Hawkeye is willing to take those odds. After all, it's not like BJ would come to Maine to collect, right?

“Have you ever had a sex dream about someone you shouldn’t?”
The tell tale creak of Hawkeye’s bunk as he sat down. “I have. All the time.” Hawkeye paused. “Listen, it’s normal. Especially under stress and when you’re hurting for human contact.”
“Yeah,” BJ acquiesced, still not looking across the tent at him. “I guess you’re right.”

Summary
And that's the whole thing, isn't it? BJ's life has always been buttoned up and by the book. Where would he have met a homosexual? (In his fucking tent, apparently, but that's neither here nor there.)
