What Peter should say is exactly what he’s thinking—no, it's different because I feel responsible for what happens to you and seeing you hurt scared the living daylights out of me.
What he says instead tastes like bile, spilling out of him like toxic waste. “Listen, like I said, I’m not the one who got beaten half-to-death by a lowlife with a ring fetish.”
The spring of regret is instantaneous.
Carter stares at him, expression frozen but far from empty. Deathly still water over tumultuous undercurrents. He bites the inside of his cheek, pulling the corners of his mouth under tight control as he nods slowly, considering. “Well," he says at last, voice bitter and hollow, "I’m sorry I ruined your evening by trying to save a girl’s life.”

Tom’s face scrunched again, but, if Chichauk’s somewhat tenuous grasp on human expressions was correct, this one was more confused than pained. After a moment of apparent thought that reminded Chichauk of a failing monitor attempting to process data, Tom shook his head and squinted up at him. “While I what?”In which Cochise ponders the paradox that is the frailty of the human body and the impudent strength of its spirit.

"Mac?"
Mac sits on the bench that runs between the locker stands, elbows on his knees, hands fisting in his dripping hair. His gray sweatpants are splotched with darker patches where they cling to his skin, and she wonders if he bothered to dry off at all. A white T-shirt is pooled on the floor before him, as though he dropped it there and hasn't bothered to pick it up yet.
But it's the shaking that catches Riley's attention. Mac is hunched over, but his posture is absolutely rigid. She can see the tremble of taut muscles beneath his chill-mottled skin, and his knuckles are white where they clench in his hair.
