Summary
Shadow and Big have started to spend a lot more time together after everything that happened in White Space.
They work surprisingly well in the ways that they balance each other out.
And Shadow has a tough exterior, but it’s nothing that Big really falls for.
Especially after Shadow panics and cries in front of him for the first time, and Big is easily there to comfort him. The feline even tells him facts about fish to ground him when he dissociates.
It’s a shift in the way that Shadow is usually cared for.
And, as the two Mobians grow closer, the way they feel for each other seems to shift, too.
However, the Ultimate Lifeform does not “cry”. Or, so the hedgehog claims.
No one ever sees him cry. Not even Rouge.
Unfortunately, his “tough exterior” shatters during a get together with friends, after one too many restless nights and a bunch of small mishaps over the course of the day.
He completely breaks down into tears. And no one really knows what to do.
No one ever sees Shadow cry.
Fortunately, Big knows how to help.

Summary
Shadow knew that the way he felt about food was unhealthy.
He understood that it wasn’t normal to stare down at a perfectly good plate of food and hold back a panic attack, or tears, or whatever other unreasonable reaction his mind had when he should have been eating. His heart wasn’t supposed to race when Rouge mentioned that it was nearing dinner; his chest wasn’t supposed to feel tight when Sonic asked him if he was hungry after a race.
Shadow hated food. He hated how long it took him to figure out which foods were safe at any given time, and the energy it took to chew, and the texture of mushed food in his mouth, sliding down his throat.

Shadow struggles with everything relating to food, something he refuses to tell the very few people he cares about. But when a certain blue annoyance discovers his secret anyway, he needs to make a decision: let his friends help, or get better at hiding?

Great, was he supposed to feed Shadow worms now?
Frustration overcame him and Sonic threw his comm back onto the coffee table, not even caring enough to see it land before he closed his eyes. It was not even his real one anyway. He tiredly rubbed one hand across his eyes, feeling bone-tired as his back sunk deeper into the couch.
This whole situation was stressing him out.
Shadow gets turned into an actual hedgehog and Sonic has to deal with it.

The muffled sound of a phone ringing cuts Rouge's lament off. She huffs, feigning irritation at the offending noise, but looks at Shadow expectantly. Shadow grumbles, pulling the phone out of his quills and pressing answer, not bothering to look at the caller ID. Anyone calling him during working hours is very aware of the risks.
"You've reached Shadow," the dark hedgehog drones unenthusiastically. He hears some shuffling on the other side, followed by some deep breaths, then,
"Shadow-?" Tails' meek voice drifts through his speaker, almost too soft to catch. Shadow's previous annoyance disappears instantly as he recognises the kit's voice.

Sonic's quiet. Sonic's never quiet. It's against the very nature of who Sonic is. But here he is, sitting hushed, off to the side as the rest of his friends chatter around the television, playing video games. Shadow didn't even realise Sonic was here at first; he had been the last to arrive, and the group was quick to pull him onto the tiny couch, handing him a controller before he had a chance to scan the room. His first thought after not instantly seeing the blue hedgehog was to assume he was on a run, or perhaps he hadn't decided to grace them with his presence today. But no. They don't realize they’re slowly becoming addicted to the rush of each other’s presence. Sonic laughs it off, Shadow plays it cool, but neither wants to leave.
They don’t need love or promises, they just need each other for a little longer.
