His golden eyes are warm and open, inviting her to be honest. To lay it all out, here and now, confess the feelings that have been swirling in her head for the last few days (or weeks, if she’s being honest).
'I never got the chance to thank you for saving my life. Nobody’s ever jumped in front of lightning for me before. You could’ve died, and it made me realize just how much I care about you. The world needs you, I know, but so do I.'
Instead, she buries those words and finds other ones. Easier ones.

Summary
Only with the Avatar State could Aang ever stand a chance at being able to defeat Fire Lord Ozai without killing him. But to unlock the Avatar State, he'd have to overcome his attachment to Katara.
Unable or unwilling to let go of Katara, he makes his choice.
After holding her best friend's life in her hands and watching it nearly slip through her fingers, Katara finds herself glued to Zuko's side, and cares for him diligently in the days following the Agni Kai, waiting to hear word on the fate of their friends in the Earth Kingdom and what has become of the Fire Lord.
Meanwhile Aang, Sokka, Suki, and Toph deal with the immediate aftermath of the Fire Lord's death and wait to hear word of Katara and Zuko from the Fire Nation.
Upon reunion, tensions that have been building for months following the group's arrival on Ember Island come to a boiling point, abruptly threatening to tear Team Avatar apart following the end of the Hundred Year War as Katara's motherly love towards Aang clashes with her and Zuko's newly budding love for each other, and Aang's unhealthy obsession with Katara has him on the verge of burning bridges he can't rebuild.

After running into Zuko, she returns to the Imperial City and discovers that their friendship is on the verge of developing into something more. But after almost a decade being defined by her relationship to the world's most powerful bender, Katara first needs to discover what she wants out of life.
