John, ever the good doctor, notices something not quite right about Sherlock. Biopsy, diagnosis, surgery, and radiation: Sherlock lives through thyroid cancer treatment. Think that's in poor taste? I actually kind of agree with you. This fic is written by a thyroid cancer survivor (me!) for a thyroid cancer survivor going through treatment round two. Its purpose in life is to stamp all over the nasty experience with slashy goodness. I have inserted shippy joy all over the experience, wherever I could. This is a hurt/comfort cancer story wrapped in loviness, sexytimes, and "how they got together" fun for a friend who really needs something else to think about whilst in radioative isolation. Apologies to anyone offended.

The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.
The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.

Written as part of the johnlockchallenges August 2012 gift exchange, for Tumblr user nhanhacoisoetalbanana. The prompt (truncated to include the bits I used as inspiration): "John and Sherlock’s first time, with Virgin!Sherlock. BAMF!John having to use his captain voice and generally having to control Sherlock a bit. I think John would have to take things slowly and be tender and loving and all that, just a little forceful (that’s probably not the best word, but can’t think of any other) when Sherlock acts up. Extra kudos for touch starved! and ridiculously sensitive!Sherlock."
