Because I have a tramp stamp that says my ass is property of the other team’s captain, is not something Shane can say out loud, so he just goes with, “Raiders home game, you know? Feeling the pressure.”
JJ nods seriously, “yes, lots riding on this. Rozanov is just ahead of you in goals this season, yes?”
“For now,” Shane mutters.
“You will not let him finish first,” JJ declares, clapping him on the back when they reach their locker room.
He never does, Shane thinks./
Shane gets drunk, and gets a tattoo. Ilya gets turned on.

Hayden Pike was not a conspiracy theorist. Not even a little bit. Unlike many professional athletes, he had not received quite enough head injuries to be won over by crazies on the internet claiming that the earth was flat or that jet fuel can't melt steel beams. No, Hayden was a straightforward man who believed in facts and logic. He didn't overthink events or analyze interactions for hidden meanings. He was generally content to accept things people told him at face value, especially if those people were his best friend of nearly a decade.
So when Shane started driving to Ottawa more often, he didn't initially think much of it... at least at first.Or: A slightly canon divergent version of how Hayden finds out. Mostly book inspired. Set after Ilya moves to Ottawa.

There's a voice that comes from Shane's apartment. It's muffled with the sound probably traveling through multiple walls and although there are no discernable words that he can decifer, it's deep. Definitely too deep for the voice to belong to a 'Lily.'
Something close to an expression of absolute terror flashes across Shane's face and his body tenses up to match.
"I really have to go, I'll see you soon Hayden." Shane says hastily.
"Shane, wait—" Hayden tries but the door's already been slammed shut in his face.

“Oh fuck,” Hayden cursed, looking at the mess within the case. Most of the clothes weren’t folded nicely, just flung inside, and it looked like a mess. “What the hell?” Hayden reached in and picked up a floral shirt, frowning at it. It didn’t look like one of Shane’s. Shane was not a floral shirt kind of guy.
Unable to stop himself, Hayden started to pick up and fold some of the clothes within, absolutely certain by now that this wasn’t Shane’s case. He wasn’t sure if it belonged to someone else on the team or if there had been a mix up at the airport or what, but he knew Shane was going to be pissed when he found out. When the top layer of clothes were out of the way, everything suddenly became horrifyingly clear. Yellow text on black fabric that Hayden would know anywhere, that left little doubt in Hayden’s mind who this suitcase belonged to.
