Still, Scott didn’t have a reason to expose Mike. Sure, the ideas of an easy vote, a forced ally, or just his face of shock and horror tickled the horrible beast living in the cavity where Scott’s heart should’ve been; he wasn’t one to spare someone out of virtue. But he wasn’t stupid, either. And if he could hear the unspoken secret clawing its way up Mike’s throat every time he swallowed, then he bet that Mike could hear the same one batting around in his head. He could see it in his eyes, imbued with the same hunger that Scott had seen in the mirror too many times.

“Yeah, I mean, I’ve never seen him sick. He’s always at our house, I don’t think he’s ever been too down to make it,” Eric explained.
“That’s impossible,” Jack said, “All kids get sick.”
Eric shrugged. “Maybe he just has a good immune system. He did eat a lot of dirt as a kid.”

“Oh, um. It’s just some card game I brought from home,” Jake says. He cracks his knuckles. Tom sits in front of him and picks up the box. “It’s called 52 questions. You just ask each other whatever’s on the card. It’s supposed to help you get to…y’know…” Jake motions towards Tom, whose hood is falling in his eyes and casting awkward shadows across his face, “…know each other better.
[Jake and Tom get to know more about each other by playing a card game. One question weighs on Jake more than the others.]

“I’m more curious to know what you’re doing here,” Scott deflects. He peeks over Mike’s shoulder and walks forward to get a better look at the spread on the counter.
“I asked you first,” Mike points out as Scott bristles past him. His eyes widen at the sight of whisky, dry vermouth, bitters, a mixing glass, and a jar of maraschino cherries. Then, a grin tugs on his face. He turns back to Mike, whose expression is already dull and defeated. “Look—” He starts.
“Share or I tell Chef,” Scott says.

Summary
13 teenagers are forced to spend a little over a month in an abandoned nuclear test site in Nowhere, New Mexico while competing for a one million dollar prize on international television. Friendships, rivalries, and romances are quickly formed and destroyed as their numbers slowly dwindle, tested by in-game conflict and environmental factors out of their control. Despite their best efforts, in the end, only one person will win.

The things they carried were largely determined by necessity. Among the necessities or near-necessities were packs of gum, cell phones, drivers licenses, over-the-counter headache medications, extra socks, bug spray, sunscreen, water bottles, razors, prescription SSRIs, mirrors, hair products, and quarters for the camp shop. Together, these weighed about two to five pounds, depending on who needed what most; some items even exceeded this list.
