Summary
Luffy made it to Raftel, he made it to the crown and all he wants is Ace to be there to hug him. Sabo already is, given everything that happens, he wants to be there for Luffy. The tears start suddenly, leaving Luffy to be sobbing against Sabo's chest as they both try to come to terms that Ace isn't here. Cue one piece or Nika happenings and suddenly in a Pilar of fire, Ace is staking there confused as fuck until he sees Luffy crying and then brother instincts kick in. Swinging Luffy up in his arms to hug him close. Taking a second to realise who Sabo is before pulling him in too, making a Luffy sandwich.

He’s not close enough. He’s not going to make it. Even if he managed to shake off the soldiers in front of him and just threw his whole body at full-speed between Luffy and Akainu to take the blow, he wouldn’t get there fast enough. He doesn’t have enough time. He’s going to lose another brother, only this time it’s going to happen right in front of his eyes, from seven—five—three feet away.
He’s ten years old again and learning what grief is. He’s ten years old and all that’s left of Sabo is the letter in his hand and a shared dream and the promise that Ace will look after their silly baby brother while he’s gone.
“DON’T TOUCH HIM!” Ace screams. It’s pure desperation. It’s the last human thing he’ll ever say if Luffy dies here.

Summary
“I bet that some people, who fought in that war for Ace, who loved him and didn’t even know me, wish that it had happened differently.” Luffy still doesn’t look up, expression unreadable when he adds, “Sabo loves us both, but he loved Ace longer.”
If Sabo had been stabbed with sea stone, it would have hurt less. If he had burned with the Grey Terminal, or drowned at sea in front of the Celestial Dragons, it would have hurt less than this.
He’s on his feet before he’s aware of moving, seat tipping over and rolling away behind him. He can feel the steam start to lift off his super-heated skin as Ace’s fire inside him reacts to the way his heart is racing.
“Don’t say that,” he says, too loud, almost a shout.

Summary
A stranger might be surprised to learn it, Sanji thinks, given how severe and forbidding their first mate appears at a glance, but he is generally the first to fold when it comes to catering to their captain’s whims. This terror of a swordsman, this nightmare of a pirate, simply follows Luffy’s every step without even looking to see where it might lead, like a no-nonsense Belgian Shepherd plodding along behind a bouncy border collie.
That’s true for battle and danger as much as it’s true for shenanigans. Zoro is worth millions, is as much a killer and a criminal as any of those other Wanted men his posters are displayed beside, but he isn’t afraid to look silly. Not if it’s Luffy reaching back for him, sunny grin amped up to eleven, calling Zoro, you too! Come with me!

Summary
Luffy is as much an orphan as Ace is—as Sabo pretends to be—and he was so desperate not to be alone that he was willing to die for their reluctant, backhanded friendship. He would run after them until his arms and legs gave out, and then at that point he would probably crawl, just so they don’t leave him behind.
Stubborn, selfish, stupid Luffy. The unwanted little kid that Ace and Sabo have begun to shape all their days around.
Something in Sabo’s chest hurts to know that Luffy is afraid. He tips his head and adjusts his arms so that the smaller boy is tucked more securely under his chin. Stars pinwheel slowly across the sky, winter constellations that Sabo will teach his brothers how to find once they manage to get their hands on a halfway decent telescope. There are clouds forming to the east, low and gray, that promise snow.
“Sing,” Luffy mumbles petulantly.
“You’re such a brat,” Sabo complains. But he doesn’t make Luffy go away, and it’s only another moment before he starts humming.

Chopper gapes wordlessly. All the rest of Nami’s nakama have a similar expression on their faces, something between stupefied and offended—save Robin, who presses a secret smile behind her hand, and Jimbei, whose rumbling chuckle is just barely audible over the sound of the sea.
Nami—who knows very well what Zoro looks like when he’s trying to get a rise out of someone, who knows very well that she has a claim on Luffy that only a handful of other people in the world share, one that can never be broken or stolen or changed—feels herself bristle, too.
“HE IS OUR OWN!” the majority of one of the most infamous pirate crews in the New World shriek like schoolchildren.

Summary
“Ace, Ace, catch, this is for you! Me and ‘Bo chose it!” the boy screeched throwing a messily wrapped package at his head that only years of experience had him catching with ease.
“Thank you, Luffy!” It was not easy to guess what was inside. Luffy had used too much tape and wrapping paper that it was more like unwrapping a mummy than anything else. In the end what peeked out was a beautifully framed foto, all alabaster wood and silver accents. What made it truly special was the moment it was taken - the three of them in front of their new house, smiling wide, the old thing no longer falling apart and looking more like a home than a house.

The man’s face is red with rage and possibly humiliation, his left eye—the one Luffy hit—squinted, dripping bottle clutched in one hand. "You little shit," he growls, and takes a menacing step forward.
Sabo buries his pipe into his gut.
It all descends from there.
