    Summary

The palace was captured by the Chen-Pa sometime in the afternoon.

Jiayi couldn't have said when with any certainty. It felt as though she should have known, as if someone should have sounded the temple bell to announce it; it was strange, kneeling in the dimness of her chamber in the women's palace with maidservants huddled close around her, listening to their quiet sobbing and realizing all at once that she couldn't tell. If battle continued, it was not close enough to hear. Perhaps it was all already over.

    Summary

All the journey to Batu Prabhang had been like this: too long, and yet not long enough. Never long enough. How could it be?

But now it was almost over. Now they had come to the great palace of the queen of Marang, and Vayatri and all her escort were crossing the huge terraced royal courtyard, and they would ascend the pavilion and present themselves and then there would be no way out.

She closed her eyes, and took another step. Even if there were a way out, she could not take it. She would not. The war had to end, before all was lost; and to end it, she must marry the queen of Marang.

    Summary

When the imperial delegation reached Tadmir with Livia Domitia Sabina at its head, Anzaze was ready for it. She could hardly fail to be: six times already, Livia had come to collect the tribute owed the emperor of the Latians. And six times, she'd made it clear she wouldn't mind being invited into Anzaze's bed; six times, Anzaze had refused her.

But this time it would go differently. This time, Anzaze would let Livia see the break in her lines; and Livia, general that she was, would rush the opening without fear, and press her further still: So you do want it after all. Take me to your cold bed, then, little queen, and let me set it to burning. Say you will.

And this time, Anzaze would lift her head and meet Livia's eyes, and say calmly, Yes.

    Summary

There will be peace between the great horde commanded by the khatun and the empire of Dao—if all goes according to plan. The westerners have brought gifts and tribute, and even a princess; and it's just Taban's luck, that she should be assigned to serve that princess as a bodyguard until the terms are all agreed and she may be delivered safely to the khatun. Taban's given her oath, and it's inconceivable that she would break it—it doesn't matter whether she likes this princess or not. Westerners are soft and useless, everyone knows it, and the princess will marry the khatun and stop being Taban's problem.

(Except that isn't exactly what happens.)
