Because while nobody questioned it or commented on it, the chemistry between the two of them was one of the undeniable truths of the school.
It almost seemed like the only reason Mochizuki transferred to their school was to be by Yuuki’s side.

Sometimes, he dreamed of that night — Ryoji in his true form, begging Minato to kill him. In those dreams, he would shake his head while approaching Death slowly, then feel the soft brush of its cloak against his skin. He would burrow into it until he was embraced by a familiar cold, and never resurface until he forgot everything about the future, and Nyx, and killing the only person who made him feel whole.
“Ryoji…” Minato ventured. “Can I see it again?”

Ryoji has 1 hour of mortality remaining. Minato has 1 hour to dictate how the curtain will fall.
The intrinsic nature of a tragedy is that, were the characters perfectly logical, their strife would be negligible and they could attain happiness — but no man is perfect, nor immune to emotion. Orpheus wouldn’t be Orpheus without his narrative-defining love for Eurydice.
The audience walks to their seats knowing they are only present to witness unbridled humanity.

He had no right to find comfort in the peppermint aroma that had been caught in the blanket from night after night of Makoto’s always perfectly kept hair pressed against it. He now lay in that spot—Makoto’s spot—as if he belonged. But he didn’t. Not in this room, not in this dorm, not anywhere on this somber little planet. A planet doomed by his own existence.

Makoto can’t remember much of his childhood, but he will always remember when he first met Pharos. His childhood memories are a blur, but the boy with abnormally blue eyes is one of two constants in his life. The second constant is the sound of rattling chains. It isn’t until much later in his life that Makoto learns that these two things are related.
