”What’s the matter, old man?” Peeta asked, looking across the empty bakery. “Is the new liver giving you a hard time?”
Seated at a table, Haymitch’s gray eyes flitted to the boy and back again.
“I think Effie’s leaving me”, he mumbled.
“What?” Katniss lowered her cheese bun without taking a bite.
Haymitch nodded.
“She barely says two words to me anymore”, he said. “She’s lost her appetite, keeps staring into space like she’s filled with thoughts but when I try and talk to her she just bites my head off. It’s like I can’t do anything right anymore, and God forbid I so much as touch her. I keep expecting to wake up to an empty bed and a note saying she can’t stand it any longer and that she’s moving back to the Capitol.”
“That doesn’t sound like Effie”, Peeta frowned.
“I know”, Haymitch said. “It’s like I don’t even know her anymore.” He drew a deep sigh. “I knew it was all too good to be true.”Hayffie post-war. Hayffie post-I love you. Following the Second Quartell Quell, Panem enters a silent but devastating crisis: a pandemic originating in the Capitol—possibly stemming from biological mutations used in the arena—spreads to the districts through the bodies of the fallen tributes.
The consequences are catastrophic: high mortality rates among children and the general population. Mass miscarriages. Infertility in most women in Panem.
This triggers a radical shift in the social structure: female fertility becomes a resource controlled by the state.
In response, the Capitol creates Rosehall, where girls from the districts are kidnapped or recruited and raised to become “perfect” wives.The best are sent to the Capitol; the rest are distributed among the districts.
Katniss Everdeen is kidnapped at age 7.
