Summary
In the aftermath of a war he won, Wen Ruohan punishes the clans who opposed him by taking a male concubine from each of them. Meng Yao is awarded Lan Xichen for his loyalty during the war while Wen Ruohan gets three from the remaining clans. Jiang Cheng is one of Wen Ruohan’s three concubines — a political acquisition, a display of power, a consequence of defeat. What neither of them anticipates is what the months that follow will build. This is a story about power and captivity and the particular stubbornness of genuine feeling, about a man who was never seen accurately by the people who should have seen him and a man who, for reasons that began as interest and became something considerably larger, chose to look.

Jiang Cheng stopped talking, and a flash of annoyance crossed his face at the interruption. “What is it?”
“I don’t want to be the sect leader of Lanling Jin. I hate it there.”

“Mydei! There you are.”
His eyes flutter, no longer half-lidded, staring at the source of that familiar voice. “Deliverer.”
Phainon nods, not the slightest bit put off by his gruff greeting, casually petting Kokopo’s side.
Mydei inhales deeply, trying to push the haze back, suppressing a growl when Phainon’s scent fills his nose instead. It’s distinct against the whirl of grey all around, sharp and warm – sweet oranges and heady bergamot, flares of ozone and a pang of seasalt. Locating him anywhere was as simple as following that golden trail he left behind no matter where he went.
He swallows, hard. His throat bobs. His teeth ache. He steels his jaw, curls his brass claw into his own arm to distract himself from the heat flaring up in his stomach.
“What do you want?” Mydei asks, voice rougher than usual.
Mydeimos plans on dealing with his rut as he always has: by ignoring it. Phainon's infuriatingly alluring scent throws a wrench in those plans, and Mydeimos finds himself struggling to resist his instincts more than ever.
