Once they had resolved to take the stage, the suffering of a story’s hero was not something to shy away from. It was necessary to set the table for the stakes, to lay the foundations for catharsis. But such tedious, monotonous torment was unsuitable to be presented raw and unfiltered to the screen. In any presentation of Kim Soleum’s journey, this period of suffering would be reduced to a sentence like this:

Kim Soleum, as 130666, had remained on Basement Floor 13 for ■■■ days.

"A near millenia ago, a man named La Mancha claimed he would treat the High Elder of the Luofu and the Zhuming's Furnace Master to a view of Benzaitengoku's classical performance arts..."

Ashveil pretends to wipe an invisible tear from the corner of his eye, admiring the sign crowning the theater's entrance while monologuing to his audience of four.

"Much has changed since... Yet, today, I feel like I can somehow make right by that promise."

"...We paid for your ticket with the Express' funds." Dan Heng reaches into his bag, searching for said tickets. "Doesn't seem like you're treating anyone to me."

"I will hold onto this and return it to you once it has been washed." Sunday looks up at him with a sincere smile as he says so, the experience thankfully seeming to lean more cathartic than outright depressing.

"Sure. Sounds good." It wasn't necessary, really, Dan Heng would have been just fine taking the handkerchief back and doing his own laundry — It's what he's come to be used to, seeing as either of his best friends would definitely have shoved any soggied fabric right back into his hands — but he knows that, much like himself, Sunday would rather make himself useful to lighten any thought of being a burden.

But while on the topic of sogginess...

A blatant sniffle sounds out of Caelus, followed by the reverb of the two firm pats Ashveil slams at his back with his prosthetic hand while Blade quietly reaches bandaged fingers out to squeeze Caelus' shoulder.

Lonely data analyst Zhongli has little to look forward to in life. His job is monotonous, his dreams have fallen apart, and his coworkers either overlook or take advantage of him. When he dies in a sudden accident, it is simply one more unfair event.

But then, impossibly, he awakens in a new world, where the colours are brighter and the air is sweeter, and perhaps he can have a second chance.

There is the small matter of the body he is occupying, and where the original owner might have gone...

-His hair. It was his hair. Zhongli caught hold of it, and drew it over one shoulder. The tail was long and silky, and slipped over his fingers like water. Each strand been dyed with great care, such that the amber tips smoothly transitioned to black along their lengths. Zhongli never would have grown his hair to such an audacious length. Certainly, he never could have afforded to colour it so.

This strange world already had granted him so many gifts. Zhongli was fearful of what it might expect of him in return.

The train is quiet, the inhabitants are asleep. Except for Welt Yang, for whom sleep is only a distant memory, and, as it seems, Dan Heng.

Dan Heng, who pointedly never speaks of his past. Dan Heng, who regards the whole world like it might lash out at any time.

Dan Heng, who wants help but doesn’t know how to ask for it.

Welt pulls his hands away from Dan Heng’s back, leaning away slightly to give him some space. Disturbingly, Dan Heng makes no move to escape, even in the throes of whatever sudden episode he’s going through. He just sits there, still in a way that Welt doesn’t think a human could physically achieve, like he’s waiting.

“Dan Heng,” Welt says gently. Dan Heng’s head jerks slightly, as if he’s listening for something. Welt can’t startle him right now, he’s clearly having an intrusion—he doesn’t know where in the cosmos Dan Heng’s mind is right now, but he can only guess it’s somewhere much darker and far less kind than the Express.

He puts down the medical supplies that were previously in his hands, if only to prevent himself from crushing them by accident. He won’t leave Dan Heng in that place. Welt is all too familiar it—for him, it’s the darkness and lack of sensory input he experienced when he was without a body, the screaming of thousands of captured souls pressed into his Herrscher core in their dying moments. Some things require patience, like treating a stubborn, wounded child in the middle of the night, but some things require guidance even more.

    Summary

There are days where Blade feels, well, not good exactly. Never good. But, sometimes he feels alright, not quite content, but lucid.

On those days, he can see through the haze of mara a little more clearly. On those days, being alive and continuing to stay alive feels almost tolerable.

But those days are few and far between.

And today is not one of those days.

Behind him, Kafka hums a soft melody and starts to comb through his hair. It doesn’t feel awful, so he allows it.

Blade feels very much like a doll being groomed at this point, and perhaps that’s what he is to Kafka. A doll which needs maintenance every now and then. A doll useful enough that Kafka is willing to show it care, but ultimately a doll which is disposable.

Blade doesn’t mind that thought, and welcomes the brief reprieve that Kafka’s voice and hands can bring.

    Summary

Blade breathed in and then out, slightly ragged. His grip tightened… then loosened, to something desperate instead of violent, and Dan Heng could feel the way the other man trembled, ever so slightly. Or maybe it was the both of them, for different reasons.

Neither Blade nor Dan Heng could have ever expected to be in each other’s company as Fulwish’s plot rages on in the background, and certainly neither expected that company to be helpful. An inexplicable and unknown change turned the once-volatile combination into something capable of quieting the mara. In the process of deciphering this change, more discoveries are made along the way. The past cannot be removed or forgotten, but it can be laid to rest and smelted, to forge something anew.

Imbibitor Lunae kept his gaze steady, challenging, even as his twitching hand betrayed him, until he closed his fist around a loose die.

“He’s not here for a fight,” he muttered back, though making no attempt to hide his words. “Or so is the idea.” Then, a little louder, he addressed them. “You must be Detective Ashveil. You have my thanks for helping my companions at Star Rail FEST.” His gaze shifted. “Blade.”

An old routine sat at his fingertips. It turned to ash before it could be realized. With no confrontation to distract him, Blade was left with the dissonance that only came from something new. That voice… Who did it belong to? His name in this life in that voice—the combination finally broke some veneer that had smothered him and brought him to the present.

Something had changed. When had it changed?

“Dan Heng,” he returned, that name awkward on his tongue.

Dan Heng’s face shifted to surprise.

“Wait, you’re Dan Heng?” Ashveil blurted. “Aw, come on! There’s nothing ‘red’ about you! Well, except for the asymmetrical eyeliner. But I hear that’s stylish, nowadays.”

The Foxian’s tension eased in favor of her very daintily smothering a laughing smile behind her hand. Dan Heng just… sighed, but there was only loose amusement in the roll of his eyes.

    “I’m… alive?”

Kim Namwoon collapsed forward on his knees, boneless in relief as he trembled from leftover adrenaline and shock. His shoulder and head pressed against the crazy salaryman’s legs from where Namwoon shakily propped himself up with his arms, but the mad bastard didn’t move. Didn’t react at all. “Hah… you actually… you actually spared me? I thought for sure…”

“...So did I,” murmured the man, but he didn’t move, didn’t kick the weaker Namwoon off or take the opportunity to double down on how cruel and foolish the high schooler had been. He just waited as Namwoon shook against him, standing tall even when that grating voice echoing through the carriage signaled the dokkaebi had returned.

I stared at the reflection in the mirror.

The woman in the mirror was of decent height. Easily five-ten. Long black hair fell past her hips in slow waves. Sharp purple eyes, pupils stark white, stared back at me. Toned muscle, definition running everywhere – abs, shoulders, biceps. Every part of her body. And tattoos flowed through it all.

Not even remotely a man. I stared a second longer.

I made a face. She did the same.

“Oh shit.” The woman’s voice from the communication device. Yan turned and saw a tall, beautiful woman across the street approach him. The other Middle members parted ways, giving the two of them ample space to talk. “Are you Yan Vismok?”

“I am,” he said. “Do I…know you?”

She shook her head, a deep frown marring her lips. “No. But that’s not an issue.”

It wasn’t? This woman was confusing him.

She looked at the other members of the Middle.

“Did any of you harass him?”

All of them shook their heads.

“Good. If I’d heard that you had, I’d take you all in for some combat practice.” They shivered. “Remember, no fighting. No fighting. No fucking fighting. Unless they start it, no fighting.”

Ning Yingying, who was conventionally attractive enough to garner attention but not too stunning to make her seem out of touch or lose her relatability. Ning Yingying, the only one who could defrost Ice Queen Shen Qingqiu because of her protagonist halo.

Who could she be but the heroine in an otome game?

At least, that was what Ming Fan had figured that was the world he had transmigrated in. With the System telling him to help the protagonist reach a happy ending, who else could he be but the info-dumping NPC? And with Luo Binghe, who was too much of a pitiful little-brother character to be one of the male leads, lending him a hand, they were going to do what they could to support the heroine on her path towards romance!

He didn't mean to embarrass the kid in front of Ning Yingying, but, well, he found it silly that the kid insisted on carrying the firewood when he was more delicate than most.

As Ning Yingying laughed again, Luo Binghe flushed. "This shidi can do it!" he said.

Aaah, what was this? Why was Luo Binghe so set on doing this? Could it be...that he was trying to impress Ning Yingying?

Oh, this poor side character. Ming Fan couldn't help but let his heart go out to this sweet boy. In his totally unbiased opinion, Luo Binghe would make for a great male lead, but he was unfortunately saddled with the role of being Shen Qingqiu's punching bag.

It's been 300 years since Xie Lian ascended for the second time and defeated Bai Wuxiang with the help of a nameless ghost. He's almost gotten used to the boredom, the constant accidents, the boredom, the occasional demon, and the boredom when he makes a friend who is strange, distractingly pretty, and keeps coming back.

It's entirely typical of his luck that this is also the moment when Heaven remembers his existence and urges him to come back to answer a few questions - most importantly, about the mysterious new worshipper who has been building him temples all over the country.

"Don't fight, don't fight," he says, slipping in front of the young man to placate the man selling lottery tickets. "Here, I'll pay for that."

"It's alright, daozhang," a deep and pleasantly lazy voice says from behind him. "I haven't taken anything."

The shopkeeper's face changes to a slightly sickly smile for some reason. "Y-yes, yes that's true daozhang." Then he turns away and appears to have become deaf to them. Xie Lian also turns away, smile dropping after a brief moment. It is a little tiring to face such rudeness from everyone but he has become used to it. It’s not a big deal.

The young man follows him to the end of the market, looking at him as if he wants to say something.

"It's alright," he says, summoning up a smile.

"It is?" The other man responds.

"I'm sure you didn't mean to cause trouble."

Straightforwardly, the man responds, "Yes I did. He was insulting my god."

    Summary

On Xie Lian’s hundredth birthday, a silver butterfly finds him: it is followed, shortly, by a fanged and feral ghost.

Xie Lian is leery, at first, and draws his sword to keep the ghost at bay as it circles him. It’s really only logical! The ghost is a beast of a thing—tall and whipcord thin, with matted hair and blood-caked boots and tattered robes. This close to Mount Tonglu, Xie Lian can only expect that it’s in the middle of the centennial ghost slaughter; as such, it will naturally be more aggressive.

Only, the ghost doesn’t attack him.

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meet several centuries early, and Xie Lian must learn to live with the wild ghost who's taken a keen interest in him.

“What’s your name?” he asks, and the ghost cocks its head. “Mine’s Xie Lian.”

    “Dianxia,” the ghost insists.

    “Your name is Dianxia?”

    It snorts, shaking its head.

“Well, no one has called me that in a long time.” Xie Lian waves a hand dismissively—then, the thought occurs to him. “So how do you know…?”

The ghost really does smile, this time. Its eye crescents, and its ungodly fangs flash in the afternoon light. One side of its mouth curves up a little more than the other, making its smile crooked. It has dimples.

Xie Lian’s heart turns over helplessly.

“Are you from Xianle?” he asks softly. “Or Yong-an?”

The ghost nods, and Xie Lian closes his eyes briefly. He doesn’t clarify which one—it doesn’t truly matter. He failed them both.

“Then, I’ll take care of you,” he says, quietly, more to himself than to it. It’s the least he owes the trampled, discarded souls of all those he ruined. Saving one ghost won’t redeem him, but it feels like a good thing to do anyway. (It feels like something a precious, nameless ghost might approve of—if he were still here, and not dispersed into a million pieces because of one selfish god.) “Come on.”

He couldn’t believe it, he absolutely couldn’t, but his dumbfoundedness kept his mouth running when sense and doubt would have otherwise held his tongue. It had been centuries, but in this moment, Xie Lian knew- “You’re the boy who fell during the God-Pleasing Procession.”

Centuries after the fall of Xianle, Xie Lian found history repeating itself in the form of a small, mysteriously familiar young boy falling to his death. Xie Lian saved him- of course he did. But little did he know, this strange boy and the secrets he held would challenge Xie Lian's heart like never before.

Xie Lian may have tried to leave the past behind, but the past, it seemed, was not so ready to let go of him.

Xie Lian’s body moved on instinct. Though his body was aching and tired, it was the work of a moment for him to flash across the distance and catch the child falling from the cliff’s heights. Up above, a sliver of brilliant blue sky broke through the clouds and threw a sunbeam down upon the cliff, as though the heavens themselves were directing Xie Lian to catch the falling child. With only Ruoye to protect him, Xie Lian leapt and threw his arms around the small body, landing solidly on his feet with a short exhale.

In his arms, the young boy twitched and shivered. His breaths came quick against Xie Lian’s neck, little puffs of terror that spoke volumes.

Xie Lian adjusted his hold on the young boy. With one arm, he held the boy close- with the other, he pressed the boy’s face to his shoulder, quietly saying, “you’re safe. Hold on.”

Xie Lian's last believer is so fervently devoted to him that he seems to think mostly in the form of prayer. That is a terrifying prospect. Xie Lian has never heard of such a case before, not even in hypotheticals, and he finds himself hoping, for his believer's sake, that there is some other explanation for this phenomenon.

Whatever the reason, a low stream of his believer's thoughts hum in the back of Xie Lian's consciousness.

His believer does not seem to be aware of it.

    _

When Xie Lian ascends for the third time, he is welcomed back to godhood with prayers that he hadn't expected: an ongoing stream of thought from his sole remaining believer. He gathers quickly that this believer is very old, very powerful, and very, very much in love with him.

For his believer's sake, Xie Lian can cast a spell to shut the prayers out—but only if he has access to spiritual energy.

You will have temples again, Your Highness, I swear it. I will build a hundred thousand temples for You.

    Mustn't pray. I won't say it out loud. I couldn't burden Him. I don't want to scare Him. I know, I know I'm scary, I'm sorry

Xie Lian blinks at the delicate golden-green leaves fluttering over his head. The breeze is dry and sweet, like a kiss on the cheek.

What kind of man is this believer?

By now, Xie Lian is certain that he isn't praying on purpose. It's tragically endearing, how this man worships Xie Lian with his whole being and still tries to be subtle about it.

What might Xie Lian say to him when they eventually meet?

'It's okay,' Xie Lian could begin. 'I'm not scared of you. Actually, could we hold hands? I am desolately lonely.'

No. No, Xie Lian will have to start with, 'I'm sorry. You have made a terrible choice in your god. I let you down. Do you happen to have memory loss? You must have forgotten all of the catastrophic failures.'

    Summary

The light still doesn't make sense against his eyes, but he thinks he remembers something like color. There is a lot of color around him, and he is able to discern white and black and a great deal of something else. It's a breathtaking splash of vivacity on a new canvas, where there had been no canvas at all for so many eternities. It is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen.

Red, Xie Lian finally names it.

    -

In a disorienting turn of luck, Xie Lian is rescued from State Preceptor Fangxin's coffin. He recovers his other senses in good time, but his sight is taking longer to return—decades with no exposure to light have weakened his capacity for it.

His benefactor and worshiper, a wealthy and eccentric ghost named Hua Cheng, hasn't left his side for months.

    Summary

It’s as Shen Qingqiu crushes the last little fluttering Iridescent Gem Beetle that the mother decides to introduce herself by burrowing up out of the earth like a cicada the size of an elephant. He just barely has time to resign himself to an even more exhausting fight than the last one - with no rest point in between to chug stamina potions or anything! Honestly, what poor game design! - when the stranger appears.

He charges into the scene out of nowhere like an absolute bullshit deus ex machina, all dark, flowing hair and robes, whirling around to stab at the Mother Beetle with a gleaming white sword, making it screech and rear back in pain. Seriously, Shen Qingqiu feels like he’s suddenly trapped in a video game cutscene introducing the new companion! Where’s the background music and camera close up? Who is this guy?

    -

Shen Qingqiu happens to meet a mysterious stranger on the road, but he surely isn't important or relevant to the plot in the slightest.

“Chai-gongzi,” he says. “Open your hand.”

Chai Dexuan does so, obedient and docile as a sheep, even while looking at Shen Qingqiu curiously. Shen Qingqiu drops a handful of money into his open palm.

    “.... Lord Shen?”

“If you’re hard up for money,” Shen Qingqiu says, determinedly not looking at Chai Dexuan, hiding behind his fan, “then just ask me. I’ll give it to you, so there’s no need to ask strangers.”

Chai Dexuan stares at him for a moment, and then his face floods red with embarrassment. He hurriedly holds the money out back to Shen Qingqiu.

“No, that’s-- I don’t need it! Please, take this back, Lord Shen! This unworthy one didn’t mean to imply anything of the sort.”

“I have plenty,” Shen Qingqiu insists, avoiding taking the money back. Listen, he knows this sort of thing is embarrassing, so let’s just gloss over it and not linger in the moment any longer than necessary! “It’s no trouble.”

His subconscious says, “Ignore it. Pursuing a relationship with the Deliverer is nothing but a foolish notion. Even you are destined to die. To want like this is irrational.”

…Such is the battle between the fiercest of warriors.

5 times mydei tries to 'flirt' with phainon and fails, and the 1 time he succeeds.

Stelle makes a pitiful face, which Mem copies to a terrifying degree. “Since when were we having a competition again?”

Phainon sighs in amusement. “Since we stepped in here, of course.”

    “Huh, Mydei knows that?”

“I’ve known him long enough to guess that he will propose a competition for any sort of ‘cleanup’,” Mydei adds. “Isn’t that right?”

“Haha, of course. Am I that predictable for you now? I hope I don’t bore you.”

“Don’t try to, Deliverer. A task like that should be manageable.”

    (Mydei almost says: Never. )

    “Mem… mem mimi mem mi…”

Stelle shrugs, nodding. “Yeah, it’s too bad.”

“Mem mem mi mem mimi, mem mem stupid.”

“Woah, you’re getting more eloquent.” She pats Mem on the head in approval.

“And in all that time…” Phainon says, his gaze piercing. “…I was the only one that could help you?”

This, however, Zandar cannot understand. Why does it matter?

The Deliverer should only care for the peace and happiness of his world, for this was the single-minded ambition Zandar instilled during the coding process. What use is there in knowing more about an inhuman and uncaring interloper, their existence boiling down to a series of notifications?

[Correct.] He admits, for it would be a pointless endeavour to deny Phainon’s conjecture for the sake of it, not to mention petty. [As the sentient construct of a sceptre, you are afforded certain liberties. Free will, or as free as you can muster in the face of reality. It is by virtue of your non-existence that you may act for or against THEIR will.]

[Your autonomy within Amphoreus, and your persistence of memory. These are the key factors.]

Sympathy, turmoil. These are Zandar’s glancing impressions of Phainon.
