Summary
It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.
But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.
(how ilya learns about shane's food allergies) (and how shane learns what it's like to have someone who always saves him a seat at the table) (and who also makes sure there's food he can eat on the table to start with)

“I said I don’t eat peanuts,” Shane points out. “And I asked you not to eat it then.”
“You did not tell me why!” Ilya says. “I thought it was just-” A flick of his hand in Shane’s general direction. “Hollander thing. Like how-” He stops short, eyes narrowing. “The condoms.”
“Yes?” Shane prompts, a little thrown.
“You always bring yours and refuse to use other ones. Is allergy thing?”
“Yeah,” Shane says with a shrug. “I’m allergic to latex.”
Ilya closes his eyes like he’s praying and folds forward, pressing his hands to his face for a moment. When he speaks, he looks up at Shane from over his fingers.
“And you did not think to mention this? At any point? In literally fucking years of knowing each other? ‘Hey, Rozanov, by the way, there are many things that can kill me. You should know about them, maybe.’”
Well…when he says it like that.

Kip texts him, Scott sent me that interview and was like ‘is he talking about your friend Shane’ which is how I found out you're a whore again. Shane parses it for bitterness for a little while, but eventually decides that there isn't any.
Loan free, baby, he texts back, and smiles to himself at the long string of angry emojis followed by the even longer string of laughing emojis he receives in reply.

To know that Ilya feels it too, here in this dimly lit bathroom at the end of a beautiful, sun-drenched day in the middle of a glorious, stolen summer: the two of them, who were supposed to be alone, summiting the mountain together, taking turns holding out a hand so the other can keep climbing.

“You have a ride back home, right? Please tell me you aren’t going to drive. You’ll crash one of your stupid sports cars and get a concussion. Or die.”
“Awe, so sweet to me, worrying. But no, I am in Moscow. I have no good cars here, only shitty Marussia B2. Stupid purchase. You know, the B2 is just B1 but with fancier clothes? Look better than B1, though. B1 look like low-money 80’s future movie.” He makes an annoyed sound. “No. I do not have word. научная фантастика. What is movie type that has flying cars?”
“Jesus,” Shane says, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk so much.”
“You like my voice, da? So is no problem, for you.”
“Fuck you. Do you mean sci-fi?”
Rozanov makes a triumphant sound. “Yes, that! Sci-fi. B1 look like that meme of a cat’s face covered in cream. Ugly car. So, at least I have better choice. I can look at it and not wish to drive it off cliff and into garbage land.”
“...You’re thinking of a landfill.”
Or, Ilya keeps calling Shane at odd hours to talk about nothing and everything. Shane, for some reason he can’t quite rationalize, keeps answering. And texting. And then things get a bit out of hand.

Even though he makes fun of Shane for being slow or having a weak backhand, Shane knows he’s just being a humorous dickhead on purpose. Shane pretends to be offended, if only to delight Ilya further, but each time Shane secretly thinks it’s very funny. Shane is one of two players in the NHL — the other, of course, being Ilya himself — who have a yearly scoring race so intense that it’s covered by sports media in its own segment separate from everyone else’s, and Ilya says Shane’s bad at hockey.
That’s fucking hilarious.

Ilya. Ilya cannot breathe. There is a knife in his gut now, and the one in his throat, and there is Mama on the floor and Lyosha in the doorway and every goddamn dignitary the MLH has watching him—watching him—
And Maxim Fyodorovich Dubov, who is not homophobic but doesn’t wear the Pride jerseys or use the tape, who wants to go home, is very very careful with his stupid English words—this man just murdered Ilya at the bar of the Four Seasons in Vegas with everyone watching, on behalf of the motherland and on behalf of Lyosha, Lyosha who has authority now, who has denounced him and come out of it with honor, who has no family now—who designed a message to fly ear-to-ear, travelling ten thousand kilometres without leaving a trace, buried in ciphers and subtext and the mountain man’s forbidding face.
Safe, Ilya. We survived it. You did not hurt us. We cannot be hurt because of you. We are safe, all safe.

Summary
Shane Hollander is a man who thrives on structure, routine, the solid ground of a ten-year plan. Ilya likes that about him, likes the embracing squeeze of having a life organized in tandem with Shane.
No one would call Ilya a man who thrives on structure. But it’s there, if not in his DNA then in the patterns of his brain. A call-and-response of: they do this, I do that.
When Ilya’s life is flayed open for the world to dissect, how will they push-and-pull their way back towards what was once a well-organized life?
“I thought we could go through the schedules and figure out what days we’ll be in the same cities this season, or when either of us have a couple of days off in a row. Maybe make a shared calendar, so we c—”
“A sex calendar? Your parents are arriving in thirty minutes, and you are proposing making a sex calendar?” Oh, this was delicious. He’d be able to eat out on this for years, if Shane was willing to give him that long.
“It’s not a sex calendar! It’s just … when we might be able to see each other,” he finished, already sounding defeated.
“And what are you planning on doing when we are seeing each other? Not fucking?”

Instead, Shane said: “Arm wrestle.” It was not a question.
“Loser goes first.”
“Prepare to talk, neudachnik.”
“I should not have taught you chirps,” Ilya muttered, even as his heart swelled, reliably as ever, at the sound of Russian from Shane’s mouth.
They braced on either side of the kitchen island and gripped each other’s hand. “3 … 2 … 1 ….”
Ilya realized within milliseconds that he should have picked the competition. He’d run his recovery routine, of course: chocolate milk, flush ride, cold tub, foam rolling, stretches, PowerDots, the whole shebang. But he’d been off the ice for five hours. Shane had been off the ice for fifty-three hours. His scheming, evil, lovely Shane.
“Start talking, Rozanov,” his cruel boyfriend said, crushing Ilya’s hand onto the granite and staring him down.
“You cheat. This is dirty trick,” Ilya grumbled. But even so, he went to retrieve the papers from his study. “You will need glasses.”

Summary
The first thing you should know about time loops is that they’re really fucking hard to break. The second thing is that you can never break one in such a way that it is incapable of returning.
The third thing you should know is that everyone around you has probably been stuck in a time loop at one point or another, and they made it out alive. This is only comforting if you’re a numbers guy, or if you’re the kind of guy who talks to others about how it feels to live the same day over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Shame if you’re not; the most important thing you should know about breaking a time loop is that it helps to tell someone you’re trapped in one in the first place.

“Oh, I—um,” Shane rubs the back of his neck, glances at Ilya and then away. His cheeks are flushed, just a little bit. He swallows and then looks back up at him. “Just--couches.”
Ilya blinks. “Couches,” he says blankly, and Shane nods and then shrugs. Embarrassed, maybe. For what, Ilya doesn’t know.
“I mean, I don’t like your couch much either,” he mutters, pursing his lips. “If I’m being honest. And, uh, I—” Shane’s eyes dart away again, and he shifts on the sectional, drawing his feet up onto the cushion and then curling his hand around the ball of his kneecap. “I can fix that,” he tells Ilya. “That’s something easy to—the rest, I don’t….” He trails off, shrugs again and fidgets.
Ilya can fill in the blanks after so long loving this man. He should not even be surprised, really. He should not be so shaken to his core. Ilya gave Shane a long list of everything that is wrong in his life, told him it hurt him and told him he was suffering. And then he gave him a few hours by himself. And things like retirement and coming out and shit hockey teams and scoring slumps are hard and unwieldy things for even Shane Hollander to fix given only a few hours.
But a couch? Shane can do that. Shane can find Ilya a new couch if Ilya does not like the one he has.

“Scott Hunter is one of the most accomplished hockey players I have ever had the honor of facing, and he has played longer than I have, so I'm not sure ‘filling up’ is particularly accurate at this stage in his career,” Hollander says mildly, and now is when he pulls away from the man. “Though if your comment reflects your company's official position on inclusion in the sport, I will unfortunately have to reconsider our partnership moving forward. I have my own brand image to maintain, as you know, and there is a reputational risk to being associated with bigotry. You understand, of course.”
“Of course,” the man says faintly. He mumbles, “If you'll excuse me,” and slinks off into the crowd.
Holy shit.
Under his breath, Hollander mutters, “Inclusion in the sport. Inclusion in hockey? What the fuck else sport would I be talking about? Inclusion in the sport.” He looks at them. “Does ‘inclusion in the sport’ or ‘inclusion in hockey' sound better?”
“What?” Kip says faintly. What the fuck just happened?
“If I have to give that spiel again,” Hollander clarifies, like that was the question, “do you think ‘inclusion in the sport’ or ‘inclusion in hockey’ sounds better?”

Sometimes they’re curled up on the bed together afterwards and Shane runs his hands up and down Ilya’s body, rhythmic and smooth, touching just to touch. Ilya is stunning in the literal sense of the word: Shane is paralyzed by him, struck dumb. Desire may never be a problem here, but understanding is: Ilya feels distant and incomprehensible to Shane.

“I– it’s been this way all my life, Ilya. I was ashamed of it. But it’s been easier, with you, lately. I think that’s what you mean by me seeming more comfortable.”
For a moment it looks like Ilya is going to say something. Shane pauses to let him speak, but all Ilya does is kiss him.
“It still happens with you, sometimes,” Shane says when they part. “You know– when you make a joke and I take it seriously, or I take something too literally? There’s still something wrong with me.”
Ilya opens his mouth.
“No,” Shane says. He can feel himself tearing up, and he swallows, controlling it. He will not cry, he tells himself. “There is. But I’m not ashamed of it with you.”

Summary
“Hey,” Hollander says softly, settling a hand on Ilya’s back.
Ilya turns away and fixes his gaze on a spot of chipped paint on the wall, trying to will the moisture trailing down his cheeks back into his tear ducts. “Sorry,” he whispers, shaking his head.
He can’t actually remember the last time he felt so utterly mortified. This is not at all what he’d envisioned happening when Hollander asked for his room number. He’d guessed that a conversation was on the horizon; Ilya had just imagined it happening after he reminded Hollander exactly what he’d been missing while he was off being Rose Landry’s boyfriend. But no, Hollander always wants to clear the air, always needs to fucking talk, even though Ilya never has the right words for him.
“Hey,” Hollander says again, somehow even more tenderly.
The bed shifts, and suddenly Hollander is crawling into Ilya’s lap and cradling Ilya’s face in his hands and kissing him.

Shane rolls his eyes. “I think I can handle one kiss.”
“OK, then come here.”
Ilya beckons to him, and Shane scoots closer and leans down. Ilya closes the distance between them with a firm hand cupping Shane’s jaw, and Shane “I can handle one kiss” Hollander fucking melts, draping his upper body across Ilya’s chest as he cradles Ilya’s face in his hands. True to his word, Ilya doesn’t make it difficult for him to pull away, should he want to; the hand on Shane’s jaw moves to palm the back of his head instead while the other splays out midway down his back, just to feel him, not to hold him. Just for one more minute. Maybe two.
Ilya has no idea how much time passes before Shane breaks away with a little gasp. “Jesus,” Shane whispers, and Ilya opens his eyes to see a slightly dazed look on his face. “I have to go.”
“I know,” Ilya says quietly, letting his hands fall away, though not without one last brush of his thumb against the freckles on Shane’s left cheekbone.
“I really have to go,” Shane repeats, like he’s having an argument with himself that Ilya is only hearing one side of.
A wry smile tugs at Ilya’s lips. “You don’t sound very sure about that.”

“Nightmare!” Chimes in another voice, there and gone again too fast for Shane to take a guess at who it is.
“Seriously, I thought he was gonna kill us all,” Carmichael continues cheerfully. “We were even holding prayer meetings that you’d take him back. Man’s a wreck without you, seriously, even worse than usual. He-oh, sure, here you go.”
“Jane, you have to stay with him, okay?” Comes the voice of what Shane is pretty sure is the team’s rookie. “I’m too young to die.”
“He’s too young to die!” Repeats Carmichael’s voice in the background. “He’s only eighteen! He’s a baby! You want a baby’s death on your conscience, Jane?”
“They’re telling the truth,” comes what Shane thinks is Victor St-Simon’s voice. “Listen, for the good of us all, you have to stay with him forever, okay? Or at least until he retires and can’t kill us all because he is horny and lonely and in his feelings about it. Make him give you our numbers and then just text us if he gets on your nerves, alright? We’ll beat him up and send you some flowers with his credit card or something. You just have to promise to never leave us alone with single Rozy agai-ow, fuck!”

The light is turning gold to amber now. The shadow of the treeline creeps toward them across the water.
Shane shifts slightly. He takes a breath in the way he does that precedes something, and Ilya braces himself without entirely knowing why.
“Thank you,” Shane says, quietly. “For coming.”
Ilya is quiet for a moment.
It’s such a small thing to say. Two weeks, and thank you for coming, like Ilya showed up to a dinner party, like he brought a bottle of wine and made polite conversation, and is now collecting his coat from the hook by the door.
Thank you for coming.
“Thank you,” Ilya says, very carefully, to the sky, “for inviting me.”
Shane’s hand presses flat against his chest, over his sternum, and Ilya covers it with his own.

Bookmarker's Notes
Asylum story (long legal battle one)
Shane had designed the cottage himself. It was one of the first things he'd done when the money started being real money — hired an architect, bought a piece of land on the lake, ten minutes down the road from the cottage his parents had vacationed in when Shane was growing up. He'd spent six months on the plans.
Every detail was deliberate: the layout of the kitchen, the width of the doorframes, the placement of the windows so the morning light hit the counter and the evening light hit the porch. He'd designed a space built around the things that calmed him — controlled sight lines, predictable routines, everything where it should be.
What he hadn't understood then, and what he understood now, was that he'd also designed it for Ilya. The master bedroom that became their bedroom. The kitchen wide enough for two people to cook without touching unless they wanted to. The porch swing that was exactly the right width. He'd built the cottage years before Ilya had ever set foot in it, and somehow every choice he'd made had left room for a person he hadn't admitted he was waiting for.

Summary
The picture is leaked on a random fucking Tuesday in November, months after Ilya was last in Montreal.
Grainy and dark, enhanced digitally to shit but still just recognisable enough; Shane Hollander smiling dopily as a broad-shouldered man in a dark hoodie has him pushed up against a red brick wall, one knee lifted to hook around the back of a thigh, a large hand possessively holding it in place as the hooded figure has his face hidden in the crook of Hollander’s neck — presumably kissing him there, intimately.
Ilya knows his team is good, and they do the best they can.

Carter Vaughn from the Admirals shares a picture from way back when in Sochi, when he was watching the figure skating with Hunter and Hollander, captioned Imagine me telling these guys about gay figure skaters being brave for competing in Sochi. Once again, the comments are a riot.

"I have missed you." Simple. No performance. "I have missed you in a way that I don't think I can explain in English or Russian or any language I know."
"Try."
"It is like—" Ilya's brow furrowed. The expression he made when he was reaching for a word in his second language and finding it insufficient. "It is like a room in my chest. And you are supposed to be in the room. And when you are not there, the room is still there, but it is empty, and I can feel the emptiness. Every day. I walk around with an empty room inside me and everyone expects me to act like I am whole."

Summary
Media: Here is the goodest most normal boy.
Me: Oh so he’s a lil fucked up, got it. Here he is developing a bruise kink on top of everything else going on.Something’s different, just in general. Like wearing sunglasses, a filter of sorts over everything, but if Shane was in any way honest with himself, he’d know it was more like going without for the first time.
He’s painfully aware of his body these days; how it looks, how it moves, how it responds to… stimuli. And it is responding, lately. His bruises, too: always just there, so used to them they’d barely registered anymore, but recently there’s been a sort of constant hum of them at the edge of his awareness. It’s a layer of input he really doesn’t need right now, busy as he is.
But he’s been woken up. Restless. Needy.
Late in bed, when all his chores are done, fingers travel up to his collarbone, where the newest acquisition is waiting for him.

Shane is surprised to feel his arm still working. Not worse. Maybe even a little better. He keeps windmilling it carefully while walking around the kitchen island.
“I ah,” Ilya says casually, studying the coffee machine. “I looked up what stretches you need to be doing. That was one of them.”
Shane turns around and looks at him, stunned.
Ilya shrugs.
I love you, Shane thinks.
“You’re hired,” he says instead, but it comes out the same.

Ilya holds him. Presses a hand into the small of his back, his little finger slipping under where his jeans gap. It’s not meant to be suggestive. He just wants to be close.
They part after another long moment. Ilya’s chest hurts.
“I, uhm…” Hollander trails off, hesitating. Ilya nods.
“We will just kiss,” he says softly. “Is okay.”
Hollander nods, taking a deep breath.
“Okay,” he whispers. “I’d like that.”
