“You get all prickly and you like, act like someone pushed an invisible button when they do that.”
Mike can’t help but scowl just a little, the way his mind’s twisting and turning at her words not helping the confusion he’s felt since setting foot into this room. “Do what Max? You're making no sense.”
“Like, it physically harms you when, I don't know, when these boxes are placed over you?”
He pinches the bridge of his nose before saying, “Boxes?”
Max is quiet for a moment, and suddenly the air's thicker, harder to navigate and a little more uncomfortable. “The social boxes,” she says, and Mike’s looking at her for far too long.
Social…boxes.
A part of him recoils at the claim, almost wants to reject it and call her delusional but…but why? Why is that the first reaction he has?
Five times Mike shrugs off the questions inside growing up and one time asks about them.
Their friends deliver the answers

Summary
If Mike were to be questioned about what happened earlier, he would say that he didn’t mean for it to happen at all.
And, like, yeah, he’s not lying or anything. He really wasn’t planning on kissing his best friend straight on the mouth in a valiant attempt to shut him up, but saying that he didn’t mean for it to happen implies that it was a mistake, accidental, unthinking, even; and that’s–well–that’s not strictly true, either.

Mike's breath hitched again, not out of fear but something else— something he was too afraid to name, something he had suspected for a long time and buried deep.

Will shot him another smile. “Of course I’m going to miss you. Are you going to miss me?”
Mike wanted Will closer, the contact of their two hands wasn’t enough. He needed to pull him close and never let him go. “Obviously. Just wait, I’m going to call you so much you’ll get sick of me. I’m going to cost you so much money in long distance phone calls, you’re going to have to cut the wire to stop me.”
Will laughed and the sound rang like a song through Mike’s ears. Of all people's laughs, Will’s was his favorite. Dustin’s was too funny sounding, Lucas’ was too shrill. Eleven’s was just… too normal. But Will, Will’s laugh was perfect.
“I’m holding you to that,” Will answered.

As obvious as Mike's eyes landing on Will again, and again, and again.
Vecna had torn Hawkins in half. The air tasted like chemicals and ash. Schools shut down, and soldiers patrolled the streets like the world had tilted just past survivable. Everything was wrong, but Mike Wheeler wasn’t complaining, because two months ago the Byers had moved in with the Wheelers.
Mike’s breath stumbled in his chest. He tried to ground himself, tried to think of anything, anything except the awareness of how close Will was (he was sitting at a normal distance), except the shape of Will’s mouth when he spoke. Maybe if he counted to ten, he could shake off whatever the hell this was instead of staring at Will’s lips like some creep.
One… two… three… four…
When he lifted his eyes again, Will’s eyes were still on him, he was still talking, and he looked so alive.
Five… six—
Mike’s pulse thudded hard enough that the numbers broke apart in his head. The air felt too thin, his chest too tight, everything tilting just slightly off-center around the curve of Will’s smile.
God.

But for Will to go from almost a year of little to no contact to Mike to suddenly being forced into close proximity to him, first into a stuffy pizza van, only to now also invade his home?
The verdict is still out on this one — either, these circumstances are going to lead to the best months of Will’s last two years, or they will very much result in his unavoidable and torturously slow death.

Summary
Their shoulders brushed again, slow and equally savored. The kind of movement you couldn't pretend was an accident.
So Will brushed back, just barely. Testing. Flirting. Mike inhaled softly, the faintest noise escaping him. And then he spoke like he was physically unable to stay silent any longer.
“Will? If… if that boy you like…” he was standing so close that Will could feel the warmth of him against the cold air. “…If you ever wanted to tell him…”
Will felt his breath stop.
“…I think he’d want to know.”
