Hollander stepped closer to the windowsill. Between a pair of empty designer vases sat a cheap ceramic lucky cat, white, with one paw raised. Hollander brushed his thumb over a small chip in the glaze. Somehow, looking was never enough for him. Whenever he liked something – the picture in the living room, the leaf, now this cat – he reached out and touched. Ilya remembered how, the night of their first hook-up, Hollander had touched him first too: fingers curling around Ilya’s arm, as though physical contact were the only way to make sure he was real.
