Summary
He’d split a rock on his head as a child. He’d ripped a nadder’s head from its shoulders as a baby. He’d been made chief when his father died to dragons, and as chief he’d watched his Valka miscarry for years only to be snatched away by dragons from their only surviving child; and, nearing what should have been the end of his time as chief, his heir and son had gone missing, probably because of dragons too. And he’d survived that. The people of Berk were tough, worn and weathered and rooted down into the earth like the mountain against whose base they had settled.
But Stoick wasn’t so certain anymore that they could survive much longer. Hiccup was gone, but the village still skirted disaster; Astrid was his heir, but the Berk she was inheriting was char and charcoal.
After Hiccup went missing Stoick's certainty in victory against dragons disappeared too. A mysterious Dragon Master offers hope, but hope is a man with a Night Fury for a shadow and a power that brought the tyrant who last bore that title to his knees.

He could tell based on the fact that he threw up twice already; he was shivering despite being wrapped in blankets; he felt freezing despite how his skin was hot and clammy, and, of course, because there was a damning number on that dumb thermometer in his hands. But no one was home. No one would be home, either, so he was sick and alone. Normally Robert was just alone. Chase wouldn’t be here until later, like, 4:30pm or something. It was 7:48am and Robert thought he was going to die.

Cass and Benny fight for Dean's attention.
...
The next strange thing Dean notices is the smell of something burning.
"Damn it Sam." He grumbles, heading to the kitchen. "You know you can't handle a stove."
Oddly enough, Sam isn't the one burning the bunker to the ground.
It's Cass, standing with his arms folded and a big ole pout on his face as a circle of holy fire encases him.
"Oh man." He grabs the fire extinguisher, "Benny got you good."
But the time the flames die down and the brand new scotch mark on the floor is steaming, Dean faces Cass seriously. "Is this thing between you two over?"
Cass scowls, "I need to retaliate."
"No you don't." Dean says. "Both of you mean a lot to me. I'm asking you not to pursue this." Dean waits a beat. "What are you two even bickering about?"
Suddenly unsure, Cass glances away.
"You wouldn't understand."
"Hey." He says gently. "I'm not gonna laugh or anything. Talk to me."
"You like him better." The words are bitter.
"Did I hack through monster heaven to find him?" Dean asks.
Silence.
"I always like you better."

Summary
He doesn’t understand why Dean likes forcing them to watch his old stupid Westerns. Most times, Sam just goes along with it because he can just tune it out. Of course it helps that Cass always shows up for Dean’s movie marathons. He supposes it’s because Cass is a fan of hanging out with them. Or it could be because he likes popped corn. He usually eats at least an entire bowl-full, despite not actually needing to. Dean especially enjoys the way he sometimes uses his grace to pop the hard kernels that settle to the bottom.
With Cass’ grace waning though, Sam doubts that there will be any antics tonight.
Cass and Dean have just recently gotten back on speaking terms. And unsurprisingly, there was no gentle progression back into friendship. Both seemed eager to just pick up where they left off immediately.
Cass makes a strange noise as he stares down at his phone. Sam gives him a quizzical look.
“Dean, can you pause?” He asks.
Dean presses pause and looks between then, with a miffed expression.
“What?”
Sam just shrugs.
“Sam.” Cass says slowly. “You spell my name as ‘C-a-s-s.’ Why?”

Lots of protective!Dean, resilient!Sam, good parent!John. Most of this was written well before seasons 9+ but I think it still matches really well with the series.
