“It doesn’t matter.” But it doesn’t sound like Wylan believes it. He’s trying to convince himself he does, unable to look at him and instead turning his head to stare at a group of people crossing the street. “And I will come to you, wherever you are.”
“Did you think I wasn’t coming back?” It’s absurd for Jesper to consider, to imagine himself not running to Wylan the second he gained a grain of clarity, the moment he felt like he could leave this place behind.
Wylan’s hand in his hair stills, but he doesn’t take it away. “What was I supposed to think? You didn’t come back after a few hours, or after a day, two days.”

“You’ve been in the cold for more than an hour, Wylan,” Jesper declares, his tone so serious that it reminds Wylan of how Jesper addresses discussions with merchants and bankers he doesn’t particularly like. “Your whole face is white as a ghost, you’re shivering like crazy and you feel freezing. Aren’t you freezing?”
If he’s being honest, he hasn’t felt much at all these past few days. There is the blinding force of adrenaline and panic that drives his every move, keeping his heart beating like a rabbit’s and his body at verge of overheating in the middle of the night. He raises his hand to his cheek but he doesn’t feel much besides a traveling numbness that covers his whole arm, the pressure of his fingers on his face.
