Summary
“I must have heard you wrong just now,” Crowley drawls, very carefully. “Say that again?”
“Would you like to try kissing?” Aziraphale repeats, in the same shockingly casual tone, looking unbothered and unworried. “With me, of course. If somehow that wasn’t clear.”
Crowley laughs. It’s short and panicked, but it’s nevertheless an outburst of laughter.
“What makes you think I haven’t done it before?”

Summary
Crowley knew something was wrong the moment he saw the sender's name on the screen of his phone. Aziraphale almost never sent him text messages. The one that he just received broke his heart. He had to go and talk to his friend as soon as possible, despite the late hour and his own insecurities.

“I must say, it was very rude of you to go to sleep so suddenly.” Aziraphale patted his chest. “I thought something was wrong.”
“Something was wrong, you featherbrain,” Crowley gritted. “I didn’t go to sleep, not on purpose. I passed out.”
“Oh.”

“You said,” Aziraphale began, and then stopped, cleared his throat. “You said you’d changed your mind about leaving. That you’d—just lost your best friend.” He looked back up, his face open and vulnerable in a way Crowley had only seen a handful of times in all their years of togetherness, and asked, “Was that… were you talking about… me?”

And they were back at the bookshop.
And there was, omnipresently, a sudden and subtle pain, like a scab, like a bruise, a wound that would heal but first resolutely scar. Aziraphale felt it, all over the world. The very air was raw, as if it still held cinders.

'“Look I understand, you’ve got to check up on the new occupants, make sure I’m a proper ‘fit’ for the neighborhood or whatever euphemism you’re going to use this time, 'the greater good,' I saw the film, I get it. But I peeked in at the place next door the agent mentioned and if you aren’t bothering him I really don't think you should be-”
“I’m your neighbor,” Aziraphale interrupted. “I own that place next door?”
“Oh.”'
Since the next shop over closed down, Aziraphale's had a peaceful few months, barring those unpleasant interactions with the men in cheap suits who keep trying to persuade him to sell his shop. But now a (handsome) new owner has taken up residence beside him and, horror of horrors, he wants to open up a coffee shop.

It’s the rarer more intimate glimpse Crowley is afforded into his friend’s turmoils, and it’s the one that hurts the most. Because he never does anything about it. Neither of them do, but especially not Crowley, and especially not now. Imagine the implications…

Anthony J. Crowley's life seems like it's finally falling into place: his floral shop has begun to gain an undercurrent of appreciation in the design elite of London, and he might have even finally found a boyfriend who looks just right lounging on his Tenreiro sofa. Things seem almost perfect, until one day the empty shop across the street is leased to frumpy fellow Oxford alumni, who doesn't seem to remember Crowley nearly as well as he remembers him, which really shouldn't bother him as much as it does - it was ten years ago after all, and it wasn't even that good of a kiss.

Crowley laughs. He can’t help it. And the wine is very good.
“What’s funny?” Aziraphale asks.
“Are you joking?” Crowley tilts his head to look at him over his glasses. “No, nothing at all, this is all perfectly normal. Very dull conversation really.”
Aziraphale smiles back. “What’s funnier, dear boy? That I’ve considered it or that you haven’t?” -

The city was hard to settle on. With the start of the holiday rush, Crowley got just as busy as Aziraphale, though they'd begun to notice over time that their duties tended to take them into the same territory every couple of weeks. Even a few centuries ago, this might have been an irritation, but in recent years, they'd come to value it as a convenience—and a necessity. It was late November, and, finally, after three weeks of comparing abnormally erratic schedules, they were both set to be heading north.

"You're quiet," Crowley said, dangling one arm out the window.
"I wish you wouldn't do that," muttered Aziraphale, dodging the observation.
"You're also evasive."
Aziraphale sucked in his breath. Very well, two could play at this.
"You're nosy."
"It's my job."
"You don't have a job."
"Awfully cheerful yourself, for being unemployed."
