Summary
Viktor watches it all, and even though he knows most of it is a game, a play into appearances and people’s egos, a grand show of smoke and mirrors, it’s still an arrow straight to his heart to witness just how much Viktor is holding Jayce back by the mere act of standing next to him. His presence corrupts his partner’s image like mold in the corner of a picture-perfect portrait, and people can’t look past it, can’t ignore it. They see Jayce, and on the edge of his greatness, they see Viktor, hanging back and trying to slip under the radar, but he’s still there, a reminder that decay touches even the most beautiful things.

He feels the weight of something ancient and heavy settle on his shoulders in that moment.
He was in his 1st grade classroom when his teacher screamed at him for making up lies about gods and monsters and scaring the other children. He was eight when his mother's own visions become too much for her to bear.
He's at Yancy when Grover Underwood finally finds him and says "I believe you" for the first time. And as Percy begins to feel lighter, that ancient weight that has followed him his whole life slowly dissipating, he realizes that being believed can be just as horrifying as being thought mad.

There’s nothing hard drink and the constant danger of execution won’t get his mind off. Because there’s something therapeutic about fearing for one’s life that makes anything not of immediate concern go away.
So yes, things were just fine before Geralt showed up.
Two years post-Caingorn, Geralt rescues Jaskier from prison and sends him with Ciri to Kaer Morhen. However, Geralt suspects Jaskier is hiding serious trauma.
