Summary
Sergeant Tim Bradford has never been an animal person. So when a call about a “vicious” stray dog lands him face-to-face with Kojo, a scared pup nowhere else to go, the last thing he expects is to become the dog’s temporary foster. But after bubbly animal shelter worker Lucy Chen explains that Kojo will be euthanized if no one takes him in, Tim reluctantly agrees to keep the dog “for a few days.”
Lucy thinks Tim is grumpy, stubborn, and far too broody for his own good; though she quickly realizes there’s far more beneath his rough exterior than he lets people see. But as Kojo slowly turns Tim’s carefully structured life upside down, the two find themselves growing closer — whether they want to or not.

“So… are you gonna tell me what you’re doing here?” Tim asked, giving her that look.
“I came to say hi to Lucy before practice. And you too, I suppose.” She explained, realizing that she needed to head out soon. If she was late to practice, her coach was going to 100% make her swim an extra five laps at least. “Are you going to be home before me?”
“Sure, if crime follows a schedule for the rest of the day. But, hopefully.”
“Do you want me to pick up dinner, or are you gonna cook?”
“Uh, yeah, sure, why don’t you go pick up something on the way home? You can choose.” Tim told her, reaching to grab his credit card from his money clip. “Here, take my card.”
“Great, thank you.” She said in a sing-song voice, dragging out the last syllable.
“Please don’t lose it. I don’t want to cancel another credit card.”

"Hello, is this Tim Bradford on the line?" A woman asks, calmly and collectively.
"Yes, this is he." He responds, intrigued.
"Hi, sorry to bother, this is social services. Do you happen to know an Isabel Davis by any chance?" Isabel? Tim couldn't possibly know what this was about. He and Isabel hadn't been in contact since they settled the divorce.
"Uh, yes, I do," Tim says, apprehensively.
"Well, I'm sorry to inform you that she was arrested last night, and I believe I have your daughter with me, Avery Davis?" Daughter? Last time he checked, he only had one daughter. Who was certainly not named Avery.
"I'm sorry, I don't know an Avery Davis." He tells the woman on the line that he's now assuming social services.
"You're listed on the birth certificate." The woman tells him.
