But when a six-month’s long journey turned into one year without any message, and then five, then ten, it seemed like his freedom was both very real and very precarious.
The man never returned. Instead, his nephew came to take the inheritance that was his by right.
The fact that he never expected Wells to exist didn’t take away from the fact Wells was, lawfully, his. The fact Wells refused to be free as long as “being free” meant leaving the only home he had ever known was a problem, when it turned out his master’s nephew fancied himself an abolitionist.
