Phantom was the newest quintessance ghoul. Skittish and silent, the pack wants nothing more than to bond with him, to love him. But Phantom is afraid. Afraid to let himself be loved no matter how he longs for it.
They can't know what's under his mask. They'll hate him for it, reject him, and he'll be alone. After seeing how they interact, Phantom would rather be erased than sent back to the Pits where all he's known for so long was the empty void of loneliness.

Summary
There wasn’t necessarily a bad choice to make among the rest of the ghouls. V liked them all enough. But that was the problem. If he’d wanted to just make a choice and get it done, he could’ve picked any of the ghouls.
But that wasn’t what he wanted. He knew the importance of what he had to give, and he wanted it to be special. It needed to mean something, and that’s why it couldn’t be a random groupie. That’s why he had to take care of it now, before the goth girls got just pretty enough to make him fold.
The choice was obvious. Even if he pretended he needed to deliberate, deep down he’d known the whole time who he would be approaching.
