Pearl has spent centuries learning to read the spaces between Rose's words.
Rose believes in saying what she means and in the radical generosity of loving without walls. She tells Pearl, often and sincerely, that she deserves to know more of the world. That she should let herself be found by others. That love is not a finite thing.
Pearl believes her. She always believes her.
But Rose's hands tell a different story. A quieter one. Spoken in the language of touches that linger a beat too long and attention that sharpens whenever Pearl comes home from someone else's company. Rose never says don't go. She never has to.
Pearl understands and she makes her choice because some truths don't need to be said out loud to be real.

Summary
