Summary
Chim was on the other side of Buck. He held a pen light in his hand. “Checking pupillary response.” He lifted the light over Buck’s eyes, pulling his eyelids open. “Oh god…”
Eddie’s heart dropped as he got a look at Buck’s pupils. His right pupil responded normally, dilating when the light hit it, as it should. But the left pupil…
His left pupil was blown wide and non-reactive to the light.
Eddie choked. “Oh god, oh fuck. His-his brain…”
“I think his brain is bleeding. Possibly a subdural hematoma. We need to get him to a hospital now,” Hen said urgently.

Summary
Day 27
X-rays
Surgical scars
Bedside vigilWhen a charity haunted house at the 118 goes sideways, Buck’s night turns from goofy makeup to real damage. What follows isn’t a parade of heroics so much as the quiet grind of healing: hospital lights, a vigil that becomes something steadier, and rehab where every old ache has a story to tell.

Summary
It’s Dad’s turn to speak after Ana tosses him a confused look, facing Christopher with that classic dad look that says he’s going to treat this like a phase in the nicest, daddest way possible. “And when did this development start?”
“Yesterday,” he replies determinedly, “at Buck’s house. He cooks vegan stuff when I’m there so I’m vegan now.”
Evidently, that’s not enough explanation for them, because Ana and Dad trade another look. Dad looks so small underneath Ana’s intense, almost angry glare.

Summary
Buck couldn’t remain here alone with all his racing thoughts. Catastrophizing. That’s what his therapist called it. He had to move. He continued trying to dig his way with his good hand, but the way the rocks had fallen, if he removed one, another took its place. It was like he was inside an hourglass.
But he wouldn’t give up.
There. Was he hearing things? A scraping sound.
His adrenaline spiked. He pawed at the rocks again, because noise meant movement and movement meant—
“Buck?”
“Eddie?” Buck rasped.
He was alive! Eddie was alive.
(Or Buck and Eddie get trapped in a cave-in and things go from bad to worse.)
