The touch of Michaela’s hand on her cheek acted like a key turning in a lock. Francesca’s resolve, which had been a fortress of silence for four long years, crumbled in a single, shuddering breath. She reached up, her slender fingers clutching at the lapels of Michaela’s expensive blazer, pulling her closer as if she were trying to merge their two broken halves into one. A sob escaped her, a sound of profound release that echoed the desperation in Michaela’s own lungs.
"I didn't know how to tell you!" Francesca sobbed, her voice muffled against Michaela’s shoulder. She clung to the fabric of the blazer, her small frame shaking with the force of years of suppressed longing and fear. "Look at your life, Michaela! Look at the world you built! You were becoming a queen in a kingdom of ice and politics. How could I possibly bring a child into that? How could I tell the woman who had forgotten how to be soft that she had a daughter?"
