After an arduous battle with a gunshot wound and enteric fever, Captain John Watson is finally returning to London. In retrospect, the surgeons at the base hospital should have kept him a few more weeks, because it's a rather weak Watson that staggers off the ship. He expects no one to greet his arrival - after all, he left England with no close connections to friends or family. Such is his surprise when he finds that someone is waiting for him at the pier: a brilliant and eccentric old friend from medical school, Sherlock Holmes.

It's a decent life - far away from the one he knew, and enough to fill his hours. All of that changes when the ship pulls a lone survivor of a raft onboard, and as Watson investigates the poor half-dead fellow, he finds a familiar face indeed.

There's something terribly fragile about the limp body currently cradled in James’s arms. James has never had the opportunity to catch Q in a moment of rest or slumber, so he doesn’t know if Q always looks so utterly defenceless whenever he’s asleep, or whether he just looks that way when unconscious and beaten to within an inch of his life.
It’s not a piece of knowledge James ever wanted possession of, but he knows what the latter looks like now.
This fic is based on the deleted scene focusing on Bond and Q from the first draft Spectre script, and takes place after the script cuts off.

The trains and Tube lines are Q’s preferred modes of transportation, partly because he doesn’t need to be in control when he takes either and partly because of how they are constructed, the stations connected to each other like points on a beautiful mind map. Q has his preferred routes, but the established lines of connection still allow him to navigate London through dozens of different configurations.
Bond though, Bond is a wild spirit. The independence of cars and aviation gives him the freedom to do as he pleases – no restrictions, no limits save the ones he places on himself, where he has complete control of the situation.
That Q is here, sitting in the passenger seat like the best kind of insurance, is the one limit Bond chooses to put on himself.
