One of the good ones, where the leads fall in love at first sight and just know that they've found the One even if they're too scared to admit it to themselves at first. That's how Ryland likes to fantasize about it, at least.     The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still. 

    A child, I realize with a start.

    That’s a child! 

    “Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.

    “Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students. 

    Used. 

    The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

    In which Ryland kind of falls in love with his apartment neighbor. Now if only his brothers could stop acting like Casey was a threat to his safety. He was sometimes oblivious but not that dumb. He could make his own judgements thank you very much. The window for overprotective brother antics was far gone now. Court and Colt has to suck it up if they wanted back into his life.

    OR

    Like recognizes like after all. Court does not like the man that made a home by his brother's side and the feeling is mutual. Colt would like to say he's making an effort but he doesn't trust this Driver either. Ryland would very much like for the people he cared about to get along. He thinks he has earned it from what they put him through. And Casey? Well Casey already has what he wanted.

    There was one universal constant as far as drifting went: twin’s had the best compatibility.

    Ryland? Ryland was not a pilot. He understood the situation, the threat, the stakes, everything that was on the line. But he was not a Jaeger pilot.

    He looked at Colt, he knew Colt wouldn’t ask him directly. And wasn’t that really its own sort of asking?

    Or

    Colt just lost his co-pilot. That didn’t mean the danger stopped.
