Summary
It was just another quest in a long line of quests for The Inquisitor and his trusty companions. An Orlesian noble who is a potential patron of the Inquisition - just needs a little hand greasing from the Inquisitor. It was a necessary, if annoying, bit of politicking but meant the chance to sleep in a real bed at least (something Dorian was looking forward to a great deal).
So of course it unravels all within the same night as misunderstandings and accusations of stolen honor and evil Vint mages.
Or, the one where Inquisitor Trevelyan just wants a nap and his companions can't keep out of trouble.

Dorian walked into the Herald’s Rest. Ostensibly, he was there for a drink, but he couldn’t help the little sinking feeling of disappointment when he didn’t see Bull. It wasn’t like he could miss the big lummox, after all, he did rather stand out. He walked over to the bar regardless, and waited to catch Cabot’s attention.
“So,” said Krem, behind him. “You and the Chief.”
It was a statement, Dorian noted, rather than a question. Perhaps even a challenge.

Annika chooses to take her fellow Crow Lucanis along for help in an effort to keep Emmrich away from the dangers of Crow business.
Emmrich, ever the besotted, supportive fool, insists on coming anyway, and, upon realizing Annika's target is a figure from his past, is forced to confront certain realities about being in love with an assassin.

Luckily, he didn’t have long to stand there, numb. The girls appeared moments later.
Olly swallowed, hating that he needed to ask questions from them right now, but also desperately needing to know how yet another test had gone so sideways. He cleared his throat, getting the attention of all four apprentices, and eloquently managed to ask, “…what happened?”

Qifrey and Olruggio figure out what life looks like after the silverwood seed is gone. Fair warning, it starts with a good amount of angst but moves into lots of comfort. Full of yearning all the way through.
You definitely don't have to read the earlier bits in the series - it's all just a series of Olruggio and Qifrey yearning.

The rain continues falling.
(And so Olruggio forgets. And he inevitably figures it out again, because of course he does; and he inevitably chooses to forget again, and again, and again, because his heart is always the same. The story is always the same. Like a tale from under a silverwood tree, like a myth from the days of old, not so much tied by the constraints of the narrative so much as being narrative itself. Antigone must bury her brother. Iphigenia must be put to death. At a thousand turns, in a thousand ways, Orpheus must turn, and he must look, again, and again.
And Olruggio forgets.)
There is an old story about a witch and a silverwood tree.

"You know, I always thought I'd live somewhere with lots of people around," Olruggio tells him. The wine in his vessel is a rich pink colour. Qifrey made them olives and cheese with cabroccoli wrapped in ham for a late-night snack, but the pleasure was in the making, not in the eating. He sips his own vessel, listening. "But it's really nice out here, isn't it? Peaceful. Good for focussing."
"I think you would be even more of a hermit, if you had the choice," Qifrey says. "Lost in your work for weeks on end."
Olruggio looks sheepish, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "You're probably right. I never thought I'd be that kind of person, either… weird how much things change, isn't it?"
"And how much they stay the same," Qifrey murmurs.
A temporary fix-it.

Olruggio would say it was thanks to years of being an observer of young witches that he noticed so quickly. The hastily drawn direction, the slightly too large sigil, the circle being drawn to completion before being double checked.

His fright at the thought that Coco might have been in danger when he woke up was heart-stopping. The feeling he had when he thought he’d forgotten one of the simplest spells in his collection was….something else. Like a vice around his throat. A garotte of terror.
Olruggio can't claim to be the picture of perfect health and wellbeing, but things are getting strange. He's forgetting stuff - stuff that he really shouldn't be forgetting. And he doesn't know why.
